Hackett calls for foreign officials to replace domestic
referees.

This guy has reached a new low in my already diminished respect
for his views.
What a shocking idea he has come up with, and it’s frankly a
disgrace to all our PL officials who ply their trade week in
week out, only for Hackett to come in and tell them that some
are useless and should be replaced. 🤬

The irony is that he was interviewed about the stats being
announced that decisions and VAR interventions had got better,
yet he still used this to launch an assault. He was a bang
average referee, a really poor referee manager, and at 80 years
old it is way beyond time that his opinions were pensioned off.
How can he be even vaguely relevant when it is 31 years since he
last blew a whistle?

I do find it ironic when mediocre people try to criticise people
who are essentially their ‘colleagues’. Out of anyone, the
former referees should have the greatest understanding of how
difficult it is to officiate and mistakes do happen. It seems he
is using talksport and other articles just for a publicity stunt
which is arguably putting the game in more disrepute.
For the actual topic, it seems that drafting in foreign refs is
not an idea that is shared by only English fans. I’ve seen it be
suggested in other leagues like La Liga who bemoan the standard
of officiating. We all love watching the Premier League without
a shadow of a doubt but we are not the only league in world
football. There are other leagues which are just as entertaining
which need high quality refs too. Just because we have the
Premier League, it does not give us the right to hire officials
from other countries. The main aim of the PGMOL should rightly
be on improving standards to the absolute best they can be by
supporting our referees and guiding them through those key
decisions which can influence a game

Hackett appears to have become the sad old person mumbling in
the corner " in my day....". Might I suggest that as a RTR
community we just ignore his rather sad attempts to make
headlines and no longer give his rather desperate views any
publicity.

If we want our officials to improve then the hierarchy at the
pgmol should change tack in how they want our referees to
referee games in the premier league.
This will not happen whilst the clubs are involved in the pgmol.
If we are to ask Foreign officials to referee games in the
premier league, they will have adopt the ethos of the pgmol
hence there will be no change in the standard of refereeing at
all.

I think it a totally unacceptable that he comes up with so much
bile. He simply follows a populist culture, one which is far too
prevalent today. The danger of his repeated criticisms are that
they are then used by those who referee hate as justification
for their views. I would not and have not criticised publicly
any of my former employers and I don’t feel he should in such a
repeated way. My own view, appreciate that is fairly extreme and
highly unlikely, is that the FA should rescind his FA Cup
referees medal. He was bestowed a huge honour and he should
respect it. Rant over….

Calling him a dinosaur is a little disrespectful and we should
at least consider what he says even if we disagree. We should
use constructive criticism to argue the case against him.
Why any country would want their referees to do games outside
their country and accept lesser ones escapes me. Of course money
may be a factor given the huge amount of money in the
Premiership. However, issues like handball need addressing to
ensure consistency. In some ways PGMOL has improved the game,
letting challenges go, recognising that hands and arms are part
of the body and that when the ball hits the hand it is not
always an offence. Nevertheless, I am uncomfortable that PGMOL
has close links with the Premiership and the governing body
should make the appointments.
One final observation. Non interventions by VAR appear to be an
issue but if the KMI panel are split 3:2 in feeling VAR should
have intervened, is that truly bad? On another day, it could be
3:2 the other way depending upon the people on the panel.
Sorry for the ramble!

Don't worry. There are no dinosaurs about to be offended.
I've been suggesting his comments are best ignored for ages, but
it seems people just can't resist interacting.

The game and pace has changed so much from when Hackett was a
referee and in charge of PGMOL to what it is now he’s lost touch
with it and finds it so easy to come out with so much wishy
washy and utter tosh about the game and current referees

He made a right dogs dinner of the PGMOL when it was under his
command, which definitely set back the progression of domestic
officials for years, resulting in a large black hole of FIFA
representatives for starters.
We hardly saw any of the up and coming officials given a chance
like we have today for trial games and experiencing the top
flight. Yes, some still need to develop further, however the
future is a lot brighter than what it was under the Sheffield
Stroller.
