Lee Swabey’s first visit to Essex in a couple of years and first
game at all involving us since the same fixture at the Bescot
last season.
Pick of the games for Andrew Humphries and the TV game on
Thursday for Ruebyn Ricardo.

James Oldham for Crewe on Saturday. I thought he had retired and
I'm glad I didn't include him on my final games database. Good
to see him back on the EFL this season and I wish him well at
Gresty Road. Unfortunately I won't be there and I shall await
our usual report on proceedings at the Alex with interest.

One of my favourite referees and one of the best (in my
experience) at this level at staying in the background. Not sure
why he only got non league appointments last year but happy he’s
benefitted from the merging of groups this year.

James has been injured, so didn’t take the fitness test until
last summer

Wow, from a Colchester perspective, what a game! I thought Lee
Swabey was a little unconvincing today, a bit of inconsistency
among the fouls and the yellow cards. He did try a set a high
tolerance which led to few stoppages and I always think he seems
to be one of the best communicators at this level.
Whilst there wasn’t many handbags at all, there was a sense of
friction between the teams, especially involving both strikers,
despite a relatively straight forward game. Obviously I don’t
know what was said but Jamille Matt was gesturing in Lee’s
direction after every little foul, it was quite strange and he
was lucky to not get booked earlier than he did.
The only incident of note was a great intervention from AR1
Leigh Crowhurst to spot an off the ball kick out by Taylor Allen
whilst Walsall were on the counter, not only stopping their
attack but also losing a man. The only complaint is why they
went for a second yellow rather than a straight red.
Easily the most satisfying moment was Walsall’s keeper trying to
go down with cramp to stop our counter attack. Who knows if the
officials didn’t see it or ignored it, but the game continues,
Simkin had a miraculous recovery and we scored from the attack -
safe to say, he didn’t require treatment now the scores were
level!

I’ve seen many comments on Paul Marsden’s performance at Notts
County, and all of them are on the negative side.
Onto James Oldham at Crewe v Newport
Weak weak weak weak weak…..
He booked 1 Newport player for delaying the restart, but 2 other
players do the same thing and he lets them off with it. He
refused to talk to players. An example: our RB gets fouled and
then Newport nearly score from it. Our RB comes up to James, in
an ordering fashion, asking why he didn’t give it. James just
turned around and ran off. I mean… come on. He doesn’t give a
foul on our #10 for an obvious shove in the back, then he
commits a minor infringement in frustration and it gets given as
a a foul. He heavily relied on his assistants with AR2 seemingly
flagging for everything, no matter how soft it was. Major
talking point was a potential Crewe penalty when it was 0-0 -
I’ve seen a clip. I’m undecided. There’s certainly a trio but to
me it looks like our striker goes down way too easily. A second
talking point was a potential red card for Newport, only a
couple of mins after the potential penalty. The Newport player
left a late one on our #10, who was in alot of pain. When we
kicked the ball out, James ran over and then called on the
physio. He had to go off and then every time he got the ball,
Newport fans booed him?!
Onto Crewe themselves. Not even a month ago, we had a full squad
and I was struggling to pick who we need to leave out on the
bench. Now, we had 6 subs, 3 of them academy players. We
certainly had plenty of chances to score, 19 shots to be
accurate, but couldn’t hit a barn door. And all 3 goals that
Newport scored were against the run of play.

In a weekend of "interesting AR" decisions and Inability to spot
SFP kudos must go to AR1 St Lincoln for spotting straight leg
tackle catching Cambridge player on the ankle. Well done

Was flicking through the scores at HT and saw Crewe were down to
10 men so decided to rewind to the incident on Sky+ and I was a
little bit confused.
Penalty, yes - I think it’s a clear holding offence and with
what the referee (Andrew Humphries) sees I think he’s always
going to give a penalty (looks like some consultation with the
AR as well). But red card? Is that really a red card? I could
only assume he’s thinking DOGSO with no attempt to play the ball
but my that’s harsh. It’s one of those decisions where you will
only ever see a red card given like 1 in 100. Ryanellis and Acme
Thunderer I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on it.
