I agree that’s what you see if that’s what you do, but then what
is the purpose of the normally seen red line?

It's VAR so it certainly is one of the mysteries of life,
however, worry not because they know what they are doing at
Stockley Park ----don't they?
I shall be on my old stamping ground down there next week so, if
I see anyone, I shall ask them about the width of the line
drawing implement and whether or not they use the same implement
for both lines. I must also remember to ask about the purpose
of the red line!
Oops, I just heard that they have all gone into hiding already.

Well if they can’t do the simple bit of drawing a line that
touches the toe end of the foot then what hope do we have of
them getting the more difficult task of selecting the correct
frame? Anyhow the answer you should get to the question of the
red line is that it is needed when it is the torso is being
considered and there is a need to drop a perpendicular, however
that doesn’t address the issue of line thickness and estimates
of error and how it is illustrated.

Any comments on this one? Blatantly wrong positioning of the
line by several on field inches. Those few inches could have
been all the difference between Milos being onside or not. I
have no idea whether if drawn correctly, as you would expect it
to be, would have made a difference or not. To the naked eye he
looked off but it was certainly closer than it appeared from my
view of it.

Fair enough - I drew my own line over the top and moved it to
where it should have been drawn and no it didn't make a
difference to the call. Still shoddy work with the lines though!

Are we certain it was a drawn line?
There are 2 options VAR has.
One (the most commonly understood version) is to draw two
vertical lines on the attacker, and defender, and then hit the
calculate button. That automatically draws horizontal lines at a
tangent of both.
The second is to ‘drag’ a line across the pitch from the goal
line (horizontal across the pitch). This is more often used when
the offside looks visually obvious (on/off) but VAR still wants
to check.
When the moving line arrives at the defender, you can then
immediately visually tell whether the attacker is on or off -
another line in such an instance isn’t drawn vertically from the
player or ‘lock in’ the same method.
Of course, this might not be such an instance.

The blue line is the image released on SM so I assume they drew
it - the pink line is the one I drew at the end of his foot,
where imo the blue line should have been.
