"Painfully incorrect"?
Those on RefWatch and others like Dale Johnson agreed it was the
wrong decision but nothing like as poor as some were claiming.
There have been worse decisions this season.
Whether Oliver acknowledges he misjudged it, I've no idea.
Considering some are still saying he's never criticised, I find
some of the comments about this particular decision ott. And
in case I'm accused of being too defensive of him, I think his
failure to give Kovicic a 2nd YC against Arsenal back in 2023
was a bigger error.

If a star player misses a penalty are they automatically
dropped? If a player is sent off do they serve more time than
the ban imposed? If a goalkeeper allows the ball under them do
they miss the next game?
You get my point!
To continue your analogy, if there are players more deserving of
a start on the bench, then yes the manager usually rotates…
That very much depends on who the player and manager is. The
Chelsea keeper Sanchez has cost his team so many points this
season yet continues to keep his place, despite Chelsea
seemingly having more keepers on their books than the rest of
the league put together.
Managers will often be very wary of dropping a player as it
might affect their confidence, rather they thrown them straight
back in, getting back on the horse as the saying goes. Why
would a referee be any different?
