Peter Bankes - Aston Villa v West Ham

A fractious and at times ill tempered affair at Villa Park.
The big talking point is how West Ham’s Alvarez managed to stay
on the pitch. First he kicked the ball away after a free kick
award, no yellow card from Peter Bankes.
Then in the second half, Alvarez gets a caution for handball.
And a little later on, he clatters into a Villa player and
should have got his belated second caution and a red card.
Alvarez gets subbed immediately afterwards, that tells you
everything.
So not great officiating from Peter Bankes who otherwise has had
a decent season thus far.

I thought Bankes did a good job today.

I thought it was very much a mixed bag today.
Very lenient to both teams, he nearly lost control.
To be fair to him he needed eyes in the back of his head today,
the players didnt fill themselves with glory either, a very
tetchy affair at times.
Alvarez was extremely lucky not to see more than one yellow, i
guess its the new norm in the premier league for three yellow
card offences to equal a sending off however the second card
seems to be very much an imaginary one the referee produces.
Perhaps Graham Poll was right all those years ago.
