Alex is a barrel of a man who is clearly fit, judging by the
amount of ground he covered trying to deal with fouls, squabbles
and flashpoints, of which there were many, and his arm waving
took me back to referees of old at Selhurst Park. His lack of
consistency was alarming and I have to say, without seeming to
be too biased, that Crewe were not the main beneficiaries of his
wayward decisions. OK, Accrington knew exactly how to play the
game after taking an early lead, but they were given a big
helping hand by Alex, and the result was not pretty. Time
wasting by Accrington went unpunished and, to cap it all, whilst
I was thinking in terms of 9-10 added minutes at the end of the
game, the officiating team managed to come up with 4 minutes and
Alex blew for time after exactly that. Small wonder that the
fans in the Main Stand were outraged. Accrington thoroughly
deserved their win, but the refereeing performance by Alex was
simply not good enough. I am sure that Lewis Smith will do a lot
better at our midweek home game.

It was a really really poor performance from Alex Chilowicz. I
certainly agree with the additional time, I said 9 minutes
second half. I did laugh when the main stand went “FOUR” when
Mr. Guest put the board up. Our captain was enraged at half
time, with Alex and team walking off to boos and “cheat cheat
cheat” chants from the home end. And well done to Accrington,
because they conned Alex every single time. I hope the observer
and coach have discussed this performance because it was well
below par from what I expected from an experienced referee. How
could I describe his performance? Lamentable is a suitable word.

Colchester United FC (First Team) v Morecambe FC (First Team)
       Football League 2
       Referee: Purkiss, Sam
       Assistant Referee: Carmichael, Marcus
       Assistant Referee: Nicholson, David
       Fourth Official: Butler, Stuart
In my opinion, a good day’s work for Sam and team this
afternoon. I find Sam an interesting referee - as someone that’s
seen him often, he seems to referee games quite differently
tolerance-wise. Today, he was pretty hot on any misconduct,
which mostly improved the game. He clamped down on timewasting
as well as any ref we’ve had this season, so full marks there,
although perhaps 4 minutes in the second half was a minute or
       two light.
Two main incidents to report on, both possible red cards for
Morecambe. The first was a wild tackle by Tutonda, already on a
yellow card for a barrage of abuse to AR2 shortly before,
Tutonda jumped in two footed right under AR2’s nose and whilst
taking all of the ball, took plenty of the man too and I
expected at least a second yellow, but no foul was awarded. The
benefit of the doubt was that he may have slipped, i’d need to
see a replay, but does that exonerate him? I’m not sure.
The red card that was awarded has divided opinion, given to Lee
Angol in the final seconds of the first half. Whilst jumping, he
catches Iandolo with an arm to the face - it’s at least
reckless, but there is a case for it looking intentional too,
only Angol will know. I think it’s more of a red than a yellow
but, using the VAR logic, I think it stays with the on field
call either way. The only thing that surprises me is Sam
appearing to make (backed up by Morecambe’s manager comments)
the decision himself and not consulting AR1, who appeared to see
it better than Sam and said no foul.

and 90th minute it was a stonewall penalty and he seems to be
card happy for little niggling fouls some of the other fouls
were yellow cards, he seem to lose control of the game at points

"He claimed it was too early to give it". Is that a direct
quote? Did he say that to you? Or, perhaps is that was
reported, second hand, by someone connected with the aggrieved
       team?
I'd be astonished if - in this day and age - a senior referee
would actually say that. I'd be much less astonished if a
player / coach / manager claimed that what was the referee said
       to them.

With reference to Alex Chilowicz, I saw him in one very good
performance last season and he also had plaudits for the Rovers
v Stockport game, which I wasn't at, though the result may have
       been a factor there.
I've already highlighted on the forum the game where he allowed
play to continue after Rovers defender, Turnbull's shorts came
down in a coming together and Doncaster went on to score. While
there wasn't much opinion on here, the broadcast pundits were of
the consensus he ought to have stopped play at that point. The
same game saw considerable inconsistency with what merited a YC.
Reading AT and Ryan's posts, Mr Chilowicz does not appear to be
living up to the decent standard he set last season.

I agree with the above, when I first saw Mr Chilowicz he looked
very good as I think he was officiating in a natural way, and I
think I reported such on this forum, the last couple of times he
has become very "showy" with exaggerated signals and sprints to
highlight his authority, neither of which actually does as it
seems how he sells the decision is now more important than the
accuracy of the decisions themselves .... getting back to his
natural style will help in my opinion

Great summaries all round but this is spot on for me. I hope it
isn’t a byproduct of Alex believing his own hype, with him
getting VAR appointments. I doubt it is, given that most
successful promotions recently have had understated styles.

Sam Purkiss has never been my favourite referee. He loves a red
card and unfortunately got this one badly wrong (imo). Firstly
he is a long way from the incident, so it makes it hard for him
to sell. Secondly he doesn’t consult his assistant who is right
there with a much better view!! You can make a case for yellow,
but even then that would be harsh. I wonder if a different
player had been involved (someone less of a “nuisance”), would
his decision have been the same
