       John Hunting (1935-2024)
By: John Treleven Date: January 16, 2025, 4:47 am

       John Hunting (1935-2024)
born 15 August 1935 Leicester, Leicestershire
married Doreen Dutton 1960, one son, two daughters
F.L. Referee 1968-69 to 1983-84 as of Leicester, Leicestershire
died 2 December 2024 Leicester Royal Infirmary
funeral 9 January 2025 at Great Glen Crematorium, Leicester
       FIFA 1973-84, 7 Internationals 1977-83
His most senior European club game was the European Cup Q-F 2L
Baník Ostrava v Bayern Munich 1981
F.A. Cup Final 1972 senior line
Associate Members Cup Final 1982 referee
F.A. Cup Final 1984 (his final match) Everton v Watford.
The main talking point was the second Everton goal when Andy
Gray appeared to head the ball out of the hands of goalkeeper
Steve Sherwood. Hunting deemed that he didn't have full control
of the ball, although Sherwood felt otherwise.
Throughout his career he was also a tennis official and his son
Anthony was an English junior tennis international
After retiring from football he became an International Tennis
       Federation silver badge official

Thank you John. He taught my wife when she was teacher training
at what was then the Scraptoft Campus of Leicester Poly.

Sorry to hear this. One of the best referees of his time and his
final appointment, the FA Cup Final in 1984, was richly
deserved. And yes, I agreed fully with John's view that Sherwood
did not have the ball fully under his control when he (John)
allowed Everton's 2nd goal. Quite a coincidence with the recent
death of Jeff Bray, another Leics official, see separate post.
       RIP John and Jeff.

Is that Keith Hackett with John for the Ostrava match?
If so who is the other British line?
Leicestershire had 9 F.L. referees at a similar time - Ball,
Bray, Hill, Hunting, Kirkpatrick, Napthine, Reeves, Sewell,
       Taylor
Jeff & John died at the same hospital eleven days apart and
their funerals were on the same day (4.15 & 1.30 respectively)

Yes, I think it could be Keith half-hidden by one of the
captains. It was the custom then to have an experienced EFL
referee, possibly a FIFA referee, as the senior linesman and
Keith ticked all the boxes on this one, so it could be him A
bit strange if it is Keith as he went on to referee the FA Cup
Final that season, whereas John Hunting had to wait another 3
years for that honour, but John was by some way the senior
official on duty that night. No idea who the other linesman is
but I think it could be a senior linesman on the EFL list.

Thanks stepan, good to be able to put names to faces. I didn't
know Keith Fawcett who must have been a EFL linesman at the
time, as I guessed, and it looks as though he's probably nearer
the end of his career than the beginning, with this appointment
perhaps being an award for good service. Leics, Sheffield and
(rather curiously) Kendal, all stomping grounds for referees in
       those days.

       Keith Gerrard Fawcett
       born Q4 1938
Northern Premier League referee 1973-4 to 1980-1
seems to still be in Kendal aged 86

So definitely an appointment to mark the end of his time as a
       top official.
