Rob Jones - Chelsea vs Bournemouth

Interesting one in this game, Jones missed an incident involving
Brooks and Cucurella, Brooks has successfully stopped Cucurella
breaking off the ball with an arm across his neck/chest area.
VAR Scott has sent Jones to the screen for a potential red card,
with the end result being a yellow for Brooks.
Whilst I think yellow was just about right and therefore common
sense prevails, is Jones actually allowed to issue a yellow card
in this situation? It was my belief that a review has to result
in a red card or stick with the initial decision? Genuinely not
sure on this one so happy to be enlightened!

Im sure that if the ref goes to the monitor he is in control and
all outcomes are on the table

Yes, once the referee is called for an OFR he/she may deal with
the situation in whatever manner they see fit.

If the incident was missed completely by the referee then I
believe he views the incident with fresh eyes. Be interesting to
know whether management think it should have been RC and a
correct VAR involvement or maybe VAR taking one for the team to
ensure a YC was issued

The VAR recommended a red. The ref went with a yellow. Sums up
the run of decisions Chelsea are getting with refs at the moment
(Pickford / Delap / Mitchell).
A very strange performance. First half he managed to stop Palmer
taking a quick free kick and then moved the ball back 20 yards
to the incredulity of the players to a spot where no foul had
taken place.
There was an expectation that the red card would come out when
he was sent to the monitor. There was no replay in the ground.

The VAR didn't recommend a red, they are not allowed to do that.
They told the referee that he may have made a clear and obvious
error, told him what they thought is was, and then suggested
that he went to have a look at it on the screen.

When I watch the Miced Up show they recommend an OFR for violent
conduct, they are doing so because it is a red card. We are into
semantics here. If the VAR thought it was yellow there would be
no review.
Brooks looks at the player, clotheslines him and grabs his hair
on the way down.
Given what Stephens was sent off for - and Webb’s explanation
that a hair pull is violent conduct - it is beyond explanation
that Brooks gets away with a yellow.
Here is the hair pull part of it. That’s a red on its own!

There was also an obvious second yellow for Christie for the
foul from which Chelsea equalised that was ignored.

No we aren't, I'm explaining how VAR works, if you don't want to
listen to that then it just adds fuel to the fire that you're an
angry fan that doesn't understand refereeing. Which is fine,
but it does dull your argument somewhat.
VAR cannot recommend a red card for anything. What they can do
is recommend on on field review where they explain to the
referee that he may have made a clear and obvious mistake. The
referee is 100% entitled to say thanks but no thanks, I'm not
having a look, just as he is entitled to do what Rob Jones did
and have a look and stick with his original decision,
The big issue I have here is what was Cucurella doing. The
keeper has the ball in hand, natural reaction is to run into
space, yet he inexplicably runs horizontally into Brooks. And,
unfortunately, he has a great deal of history of initiating
contact with opponents to try and get them sent off.

Cucurella is clearly running to make himself available for a
counter attack - as is the player in front of him by 20 yards
(Sancho?). There was an opportunity for a fast break, which is
why Brooks was so keen to stop him from getting away.

The VAR will have told the referee that they are recommending a
review for a clear and obvious error/serious missed incident for
violent conduct - what else is that other than recommending a
red card?
