Josh Smith - Manchester City v Salford (FA Cup)

An excellent first half from Josh Smith, a referee I rate in the
style of Sam Barrott and Jarred Gillett. By that I mean he has
an understated manner, gets on with the game with little fuss
       and makes good decisions.
He’s played some nice advantages, including leading to
Manchester City’s second goal. Doku was fouled in midfield, Josh
Smith played advantage and the goal was scored. The referee then
went back to caution the Salford player who committed the foul.
       Fine officiating.
Then a Man City player was breaking down the wing and tried to
buy a free kick by toppling over like a felled tree. Josh Smith
wasn’t having it and waved play on. The only gripe from me is a
possible caution for simulation wasn’t administered.
Smith is a solid performer in the Championship and has impressed
when given a chance in the Premier League. I would like to see
him promoted full time next year as I believe he deserves his
       chance.
With Manchester City dominating, it hasn’t been the most
trickiest of games but Josh Smith has handled things well and if
he keeps up the first half standard, he will be well pleased by
       the finish.
Second half, a continuation of the first. A clear yellow card
for a Salford player for a midfield foul and two clear cut
penalties which were accepted by the Salford players without too
       much fuss.
Overall, a solid performance from Josh Smith and hopefully he’ll
be appointed to some Premier League games by season’s end.

It’s funny you mentioned Sam Barrott as that’s who I thought was
refereeing :P before the commentators mentioned him by name.
Agree completely with your assessment too. A very solid
performance and I wouldn’t be unhappy seeing him as a regular in
the PL based on that outing.
My only gripe was that Flint didn’t see a second yellow for the
handball, but in the scheme of things it was a moot point.

And no stoppage time… good to see given the score and the status
       of the tie.

A very competent performance from Josh Smith in a game which
wasn't too difficult due to Salford's commendable determination
to keep on playing football when they were outclassed rather
than resorting to kick the opposition off the pitch. The referee
from some years ago whom Smith puts me in mind of, by his style
and demeanour, is Alan Wiley and if he achieves what Wiley did
then he will have an outstandingly good career.

There was clearly some contact on Savinho, so I think it would
have been harsh to YC for simulation.
The second City goal came a couple of minutes after the
advantage following the foul on Doku in which the ball was in
both halves. I'm not convinced there was much of an advantage by
       playing on initially.
Generally agree that Josh Smith had a steady game, showing the
ability to become a top flight regular.

It would only be a caution if it was a deliberate handling
offence that stopped a promising attack, or a DOGSO
non-deliberate handling offence - IMO it was non-deliberate SPA,
so no caution would be correct.
