Pardon my obvious ignorance but..........
DIR By: robbieg
Date: January 6, 2025, 1:10 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
First two games of 2025 involving my beloved Sunderland AFC both
have seen a yellow card given for the same offence.
Against Sheffield United their goalkeeper attempted a quick kick
out of the penalty area.A Sunderland forward was retreating and
not directly interfering with play. The had fully released the
ball and kicked it towards the Sunderland player who just could
not feasibly have got out of the way and was hit.Play was
stopped and the forward booked.
On Sunday against Portsmouth the same again however this time
the goalkeeper concerned was Sunderland's Anthony Patterson who
released the ball and a Portsmouth forward who was so far away
that any form of physical contact would be impossible and once
again the ball hit the forward and he was booked.
What am I missing here ? There appeared to be no deliberate
attempt by either forward to gain advantage or am i wrong ?
Happy to discuss.

I would've said that if it wasn't deliberate then just go back
and retake the kick with no more fuss. However if deliberate
yellow card would be suitable.

Well you can't just go back and re-take a clearance. If an
offence has been committed it must be a free kick. If there was
no offence it is play on.
However there is a misconception that if a free kick is given
for preventing the goalkeeper releasing the ball then a yellow
card is mandatory. It's not.
A yellow card is only required if the action was reckless.

Haven’t seen the incidents but, if the player is clearly
retreating / getting out the way / makes no attempt to block /
has no opportunity to be the distance, and the taker chooses to
take it quickly which goes wrong, that’s tough luck and play on
- no doubt causing uproar if they score …!
If (as tends to be at pro level!) the player is actually
knowingly too slow moving away and thus preventing a quick FK
(usually as a few are out of position), it could be a YC.
Equally often have to watch for players ‘trying’ to take a quick
FK with no genuine attempt (nothing actually on) in an attempt
to get the player booked.
Ref has to be super alert / aware to what’s going on, and some
loose focus as it’s a defensive FK.
Certainly lower down the pyramid, unless blatant prevention, a
diplomatic decision is often to stop call it 50/50, tell
everyone to chill out and retake (although not technically
correct …)

Well said, Ayew's 2nd yellow for Crystal Palace v Liverpool in
Dec 2023 is a glaring example of a side taking a quick free kick
in order to get a player carded. That was a game changer as
well. Referee was Andrew Madley who fell for it and was
supported by the VAR.

I think you must have been mistaken on Sunday there was a player
who challenge patterson from behind, I'm guessing you must have
been closer to the north stand

The incident v Sheffield United, he is trying to get block it
and stop a counter attack

My main complaint from the past few games has been guessing when
shirt pulling is and isn't a penalty

LOL, those two videos certainly pour cold water on the OP's
claims. They are both very clear offences by the attacking
players and absolutely correct to be penalised.

True but stopping a promising attack in your opponent's own
penalty area is tough one to sell!
