       Stuart Barnes view on TMO
By: Whistleblower Date: January 6, 2025, 7:31 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Stuart Barnes writing in the Times is, I believe, a quite
deliberate contrarian but he makes for interesting reading
nonetheless. Today he is complaining about how TMOs are usurping
the authority of on field referees and cites as an example a
decision made by Christophe Ridley in the Leicester Exeter
match. Ridley made a good decision from an excellent position,
which he then reversed, incorrectly according to Barnes, on the
       advice of his TMO.
Barnes is quoted thus " Either the referee is in charge or he
(sic) is not. The best referees - Luke Pearce, Georgia's Nika
Amashukeli, Italy's Andrea Piardi - are far more likely to back
       themselves".
Barnes later in his column goes on to criticise the referee in
the Gloucester sale match, "a relative rookie referee Jack
Makepeace..... the poor man oozed not one ounce of authority"
Now it may be that Barnes has his own prejudices to parade but I
would be interested to know what our esteemed rugby
correspondents on RTR make of this.

Over the weekend there were at least 3 occasions when TMOs
brought incidents to referees attention for the referee to
decide no foul play had happened or they were sticking with the
       on fuels decision
I watched the leics/exe game and cannot remember that example
Also I think Jack Makepeace is a decent ref and yes he's not top
10 yet but did a decent enough job
If only Stuart Barnes had Wayne Barnes' class!!

I was at the Leicester v Exeter match and there were 2 incidents
where frankly Christophe Ridley got it wrong. We were level with
both incidents and Ridley's positioning was equally good.
Whether it was a case of not seeing the wood for the trees, TMO
intervened to correct 2 errors from a very good official. The
first was a knock on by an Exeter player. A team mate in front
of the knock on picked the ball up (i.e. he was offside) and
Ridley played on! TMO intervened, a penalty was awarded to
Leicester and Exeter, instead of being on the front foot, were
on the back foot in their own 22. It was the correct call. The
second incident which resulted in a yellow card for an Exeter
player and I freely admit probably changed the outcome of the
game was a strange one. It happened right in front of us and we
called yellow yet Ridley played on! You feel for the Exeter
player who was genuinely trying to tap the ball back but by
doing so, invaded the space occupied by the Leicester player who
was moving forward to collect the ball in the air. He fell and
landed on his side / shoulder and didn't appear to be badly
hurt. In the past, the argument was that the defender jumped
into the attacker but this has for a long time been dismissed
because of the potential for serious injury. Any player who runs
to challenge for a box kick has to be aware of his opponent and
his actions and you cannot run into him while in the air. Sadly,
players mistime it but to discourage such actions by the Exeter
player, yellow cards are issued - if not red. It was harsh on
Exeter who deserved something from the game. 14 men in an arm
wrestle is always going to be tough. So TMO was correct, CR got
it wrong and even the best do make mistakes.

and this is from somebody who worked at sky with miles
Harrison(who still works on bt/itv coverage of rugby) when
t.m.os weren't being used and the decisions were based on refs
       calls only
Stuart might as well question the people who do the coverage as
well-sounds as though barnes is throwing his toys out the
       pram!!!
