I was at the game when Barnes issued the red card. It was
excellent refereeing imho but it did change the game. I get the
impression that football referees do not have the confidence to
sanction dissent and that their employer and their backers, the
clubs, will complain. The poor referee has everything to lose
and so it goes on. I find it hard to criticise Bond as I cannot
imagine the pressure on him to keep 11 v 11. Meanwhile, grass
root football follows the behaviour in the Premiership.
Incidentally, rugby is struggling to get officials out and this
is due to increasing abuse. Society has a problem so why should
Bond make a stand?

Never mind "offensive, insulting or abusive language", it was
all three !!

Interesting that Darren is getting pelters for missing a penalty
“which any SG1” referee should see and award, yet Michael Oliver
not getting the same treatment for missing an equally obvious
one ? Double standards ?

I do believe PL referees are hamstrung by the desire of the
paymasters to keep all 22 players on the pitch even if this
means ignoring words and conduct which easily merit a red card.
I would suggest that the excellent clip of Wayne Barnes be shown
at the next meeting of SG1 referees as a model of officiating
but what's the point if the directives from on high will not
back up such commendable action.
I watched the match live on TV and thought Darren Bond put in a
perfectly reasonable performance. I then watched Liverpool v
Manchester United and the chasm in officiating ability between
Bond and Michael Oliver was laid bare. However, in life some
people are just naturally better and talented than others in
their common endeavour. Is Bond worthy of his place on SG1 ? I
think that he is though there is probably an element of fortune
about it as I think there are others equally as good who have
not made it.

He did and there were absolutely no complaints from those
involved in the game of Rugby Union. But (at the risk of
labouring a point), Mr Barnes also knew what his employers
wanted and delivered. Its just that his employers and Mr.
Bond's employers want different things.

didn't Anthony Taylor dismiss Brighton's Lewis Dunk last season
for calling him a "kn*bhead" or something along those lines?
I bet Harry Wilson, who's always come across to me as a bit of a
spoilt brat, wouldn't have reacted like he did yesterday to
someone like Taylor or Michael Oliver. Bond's inaction was very
poor; he literally just turned away from Wilson, but would
surely have heard him. It would be good to see Howard Webb
address this in his next show, although we know he won't.

Notwithstanding my comment above contrasting Darren Bond and
Michael Oliver, that is a very fair point.

I think there was another United player in Michael Oliver's line
of sight, although an appropriate replay was never shown to
confirm or deny this.

Different times, different era but can you imagine the result if
a player referred to Malcolm Sinclair, Norman Burtenshaw, Jack
Taylor and a whole host of other referees whose discipline on
the pitch was legendary in such a manner. But of course,
professional football then was primarily about sport not
entertainment.

I remember, some years ago, talking with the extremely
personable and pleasant Tony Ward. He said that he hated sending
off players but if anyone used a four letter word in his
direction or accused him of cheating, off they went. He told the
Captains before the match this was his standard and so he rarely
got any serious abuse.

Ref Watch was quick to condemn Wilson's comments and felt he was
very, very fortunate not to see red. Apparently Wilson was on
the receiving end of some "poor" decisions which went against
him earlier on in the match and Steve Warnock said that the
decisions were wrong and so you can understand why Wilson
finally flipped. That is not to excuse his behaviour and he
should have seen red but did those earlier decisions influence
the referee? Or was Bond in conversation with his VAR as the
diatribe was delivered and as a result he did not hear it?
