Andy Madley - Spurs v Newcastle

Very interesting scenario for Newcastle's equaliser.
Ball clearly hits Joelinton's hand, one pass and a couple of
seconds later it's a goal.
It's the kind of decision that 99 times out of 100 is given as a
free kick. However, VAR does not disallow the goal.
I think this highlights an issue, which is that so many
"handballs" are given when it's not handball. I personally would
want this sort of thing to be a handball as there has been a
clear advantage gained by the ball hitting the hand.
Separately, Joelinton has already got away with three fouls,
having been warned after his second (which should have been a
booking itself IMO) to do no more. Can sense huge frustration
among the crowd.
Edit - and as if to prove the point, he now gives handball
against Dan Burn for nothing close to as obvious a handball as
Joelinton did.

Madley also played 2 advantages when players were obviously
injured then stopped play for treatment,restarting with a drop
ball,in the first instants the ball was put out for a throw

What's interesting about it? No handling offence committed,
referee correctly doesn't blow, VAR correctly doesn't recommend
a review. Amazing how people can try to drum up controversy
where there is none.

Then why was a free kick given shortly after against Dan Burn
for a far more innocuous “handball”?
Are you honestly trying to suggest that refs don’t give those
sort of handballs 99 times out of 100 (whether deliberate or
not)?
I would personally also want to see a situation where the ball
hitting the land absolutely has an impact on the goal being
scored result in a free kick. Newcastle don’t get the ball back
otherwise. It feels wrong and unfair - regardless of what the
laws state.

That's what the law said until a few seasons ago, and everyone
complained that goals were being disallowed due to accidental
handballs in the build up. So they changed it to the current
law to say the accidental handling has to immediately lead to a
goal, and that is the only law they can now apply. Did he
intentionally handle the ball? No, he knew absolutely nothing
about it, and his arm was exactly where you would expect it to
be for that footballing action. Did it lead immediately to a
goal? No, there were other phases of play before the goal was
scored. Therefore the only possible outcome is goal, and VAR
cannot get involved.

It is unarguable that without the ball hitting his hand
Newcastle cannot score. It literally gave them possession.

Haven't seen the handball by Burn so can't comment.
I don't believe the Joelinton incident is being given as
handball 99 times out of 100, or even 49 out of 100 - I could
understand someone misjudging it in real time and blowing for
it, but I think the vast majority of referees would not be
giving it.

I’m sorry but I disagree , there was a similar incident
previously and a penalty was awarded and the consensus was that
it was the correct decision.

It did, that is undebatable, but the law was changed to say that
this shouldn't result in the goal being disallowed. Mainly
because of complaints from fans, can't have it both ways ...
