Cardiff v Coventry - call out for replacement referee

Slightly baffled. Geoff Eltringham gets injured and there is the
traditional call for someone from the crowd. But I am certain
that one Kevin Friend was in the tunnel area when watching the
TV report on the matter. Why could he not have not done the job,
and saved a load of time?

I’d say he would have if they got no one else but he was
probably acting as observer so could have been last resort for
him to act as 4O.
Just a guess though

Observers are told not to take over if an official gets injured.
In most cases they will be at best L5 referees, so at pro games
there is more than a reasonable chance there will be someone as
or more senior in the crowd.

He was there as a coach, not an Observer.

We have mentioned it before and will do so again, PGMOL do not
appoint Observers to Championship and Premier League matches.
Assumption was that it's to do with Employment Law (someone
might know the reason, so please do). Instead, Independent
Panels of Ex-Officials watch match footage afterward and write
reports.
