Does anyone know what actually happened at Cambridge today.
Cambridge United tweeted 'Play Resumes with referee Sam Muhall
taking the position of the fourth and Andrew Humphries taking to
the field' . However as per the Forum Andrew Humphries was taken
off 4th and replaced by Mark Chalkey. Upon from what i have
looked at Stuart Butler took the whistle with the 4th (Whoever
he is) Running the line. I usually watch Cambridge and work
thier but was away so when i was told thier was an announcment
for a qualified official i was gutted to be elsewhere. So who
did start the game then as ref anyone know?

I did watch this game - Cambridge v Bristol Rovers.
Sam Mulhall went off injured. Which meant Andrew Humphries
became assistant referee and Stuart Butler became referee.
I had to say the game got out of his control. He really
struggled to stamp his authority. Also, seemed behind play all
of the time. Sent off the Cambridge captain and that all came
from a lack of full control.
Interesting game to watch as a netural.

A new name for me, with Jamie O’Connor taking his 2nd EFL game.
It wasn’t a bad performance but lacked a bit of experience I
would say, not clamping down on game management quite enough for
my liking. He seemed to be reacting very little to timewasting
rather than (like some more experienced officials) proactively
anticipating it. No major issues with awarding of free kicks and
the penalty looks correct to me. I think AR1 and 4O may have
missed a kick out by Bishop on an Accrington player in injury
time though.
The yellows given were mostly correct, although Donnelly’s one
did surprise me. Having said that, he took a while to go over to
Jamie when requested, which I always think puts you at greater
risk of a yellow.
The only complaint I would have was twice he asked medics to
come on before the Accrington players got back up and remained
on the field as the physio hadn’t entered the pitch. This was a
ploy that teams were adopting and referees I thought were doing
a great job to stop players changing their mind as an act of
timewasting, but Jamie didn’t quite get a hold of it today.

There was a member of the crowd who stood next to Sam Mulhall.
But Sam Mulhall was taking on 4O duties.
It comes down to who is the most experienced assistant referee
or what level they are refereeing at. So, Stuart Butler must be
a more experienced referee than Andrew Humphries.

Very good game for Mr Bell at Valley Parade! 6 cautions, all
correct, with only one potentially missed for SPA but it wasn’t
mandatory and the game was over by then. There was a penalty
awarded to Bradford for a pull on Sarcevic (looks like
simulation on the replay, but there was 100% a significant tug
on his shirt, I saw it). He also dealt with a mini confrontation
in the first half very well, and didn’t take any nonsense
regarding delaying the restart or trying to gain yards.

A first view of Mr Russell who, in a largely uneventful first
half, initially appeared indecisive but grew into the game in a
much more challenging second half, In the first couple of
minutes the ball went out for what appeared to be either a goal
kick or corner. Mr Russell stood looking totally confused until
rescued by a very late offside flag. A few minutes later he
stopped play for an apparent head injury (with Lazarus style
recovery) but couldn't seem to decide where to drop the ball,
eventually dropping it about 20 yards from where I thought it
should have been. Later in the half he appeared to allow a quick
free kick and waved play on before deciding that it had been
taken from the wrong place and bringing play back.
The two big issues came in the first ten minutes of the second
half and both involved DOGSO incidents close to the half way
line. Although the crowd were baying for red, I think there were
enough potentially covering defenders for yellow to be the
correct call with the first incident. The second incident a
couple of minutes later was much more one on one chasing a
through ball and I initially expected red. However, given the
distance from goal, the speed of the ball, and the position of
the goalkeeper at the edge of the area, I think cards of either
colour could have been supported and Mr Russell chose yellow.
This put the crowd very much against him and the match then
became very fractious and fractured with Salford using all
tactics available to hold on to their one goal lead and MK
becoming increasingly frustrated by their attempts to change the
situation and I don't think there was much more Mr Russell could
have done to change that. He issued 2 more yellow cards to
Salford players for heavy challenges which caused protests from
both the Salford bench and players that similar challenges by MK
players had gone unpunished except for free kicks, but given
that these were on the far side from me I am happy to accept
that there were subtle nuances that I couldn't understand.
I had expected 4 minutes added on but the board showed 5 and
eventually something over 6 were played so I suspect Salford's
tactics had not gone completely unnoticed.
I am sure that both teams will find things to grumble about
concerning his performance but once he settled into the game I
thought he did reasonably well and certainly would be happy to
see him again.
