It seems that my view is a minority perspective.
However I wasn't entirely convinced by Mr Barrott at times.
Perhaps, unfairly, I was viewing him in the same light as some
more seasoned SG1 Officials but there did seem a few occasions
where he perhaps could have been seen as overly charitable

I've just moaned about the guy who refereed my team's game the
other night blowing his whistle when people breathed on each
other, this was much better and it let the game breathe. I
accept the immediately previous poster's point that he was
charitable, especially the Spurs defender right at the end but
if players react to that and don't take it as rope that's good
management for me. It was not a difficult game but it was
handled with the minimum of fuss.

Assuming we were watching the same match then our perceptions of
Sam Barrott's officiating diverge widely. I thought he was very
good indeed and a remarkable testimony to his natural talent
that he has successfully negotiated such a big fixture with
relatively little experience at this level.

I don't understand this view, he was pretty much as flawless as
you can get. The only think that was technically wrong was no
second caution for Bergvall, but I agree with Mike Dean's view
that the game really didn't need it. I like the idea that a
second caution needs to be a little bit more yellow than a first
one, I've always believed that referees should be encouraged to
look for a reason to keep players on than send them off,
especially for second cautions.

Surely now is the time to put away any suggestions that a game
is too big for Mr Barrott or that he is out of his depth.
He has been identified, rightly in my humble opinion, as worthy
of international honours so lets give praise and accept that he
is now worthy and capable of games allocated to him

Very well put; I entirely agree with you. Of course from time to
time Sam Barrott is going to have a poor match, just like
Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor do because they are human and
not machines. Every referee who has ever officiated at the top
level will have an occasional poor game, I expect even Joe
Worrall did every so often. Barrott's rise has been pretty
meteoric, leapfrogging several other referees who themselves
were making very decent progress and of course some people don't
like that. When there is real talent ( as opposed to favouritism
) then surely it is something to be celebrated even by those who
have been overtaken.
In my profession I recall some people much junior to me who
eventually were considerably senior to me in terms of position,
prestige and reputation. I saw this as nothing to get cross
about but rather a recognition of their undoubted abilities (
but woe betide them if ever they were tempted to get uppity with
me ! )
