And once again, the fallout from Sam Barrott on a ‘game too big
for him’ is that he was very very impressive

Peter Drury summed it up perfectly, he spent Christmas 2 years
ago at Morecambe and Rotherham and now he's spending it at the
top level. Another test passed with flying colours

I didn't see the full game so I am asking this as a genuine
question - was there anything that challenging for him?
From what I saw he did fine but wasn't at all challenged - which
is a credit to him but I didn't see anything exceptional so am
interested to know.

I agree that it wasn’t the most challenging but we’ve seen some
games where referees sometimes get too involved and then
influence the game. But credit always must go to the referee
when he stays in the background and that’s what Barrott did so
well. Penalised what he had to and cautioned who he needed to.
I think for him to be regarded as the ‘elite level’ he needs
much more difficult games within these ‘big six’ ties (like
Taylor in Tottenham v Chelsea the other week) but he is
certainly cementing his spot among the top referees in SG1

Agree with that, a referee can make any game challenging and in
these live TV, big team clashes the scrutiny is so high coming
through unscathed is a good result.
I do agree though that Barrott needs to be evaluated in far more
challenging games to considered in the top tier of EPL referees.
Particularly to progress in Europe, there are some extremely
challenging matches with teams where there can be a real
difference in both style expectation of leniency from the
referee.
Nonetheless Barrott thus far has justified his meteoric rise and
can be very proud of his advancement in 2024, looking forward
with interest to the beginning of his international career next
year.

I didn't notice him to be honest. Both sets of players behaved
themselves which helps and I am pleased for Barrott. There will
be sterner tests and he will have poor games but that is
relatively speaking. Good to see him make good progress.

Interesting to see if/how his style works in Uefa/Fifa games, as
often have to adapt to be more demonstrative and have stronger
body language. Part of him getting a few top games this season
will likely be to help raise his profile before doing Ueda
games?

From my understanding 8.7 would require a few, perhaps
challenging, KMIs assessed correctly, maybe a number of
excellent advantages or otherwise noteworthy excellent pieces of
officiating.
A performance with everything right would be 8.4 I believe.
As I said I didn't see the full game so maybe this happened, but
nobody is pointing out individual excellent calls to justify
this being "The refereeing performance of 2024." So I would be
interested what happened to warrant that?
I am not trying to knit pick or put Sam Barrott, a very talented
referee, down at all. However, just as I don't like hammering
referees for mistakes, I don't belief they should be lavished
with extreme praise for having a good, but quiet, game.
