Always seems easy to say that logic says the player was over the
line,so the ball must be. But this is in the cold light of day.
Having run the line, nothing is static - often everything is
constantly moving (not a freeze frame), often in different
directions: you as AR, multiple players, the ball. And a goal is
not the only thing you’re watching for. It’s constant
processing. My instinct is always to accept that the officials
simply couldn’t tell in that split second (although it may seem
clear on replay) and that football has to maturely accept that
there are very occasionally some freak blind spots. Like the
Uruguayan AR at WC10, pre-GLT, who had no chance of being
certain Lampard’s shot v Germany has bounced over the line.

I'm a tad confused.
(Nowt new there then you might, correctly say)
If, as is stated, the AR cannot clearly see, would you prefer
that they guess?
I'm a bit long of tooth but was always told that if I couldn't
see 100% then I MUSTN'T award anything. Perhaps things have
changed??

Not just at a high level. Things happen quickly at any level
and they are often less predictable at lower levels.

that it had crossed the line?

I could see the defender’s feet were behind the line, I could
see his hand was behind his body and as he knocked the ball
forward I could see it bounce behind the line. But I must
clearly have been mistaken!!

Like I said, if you share the aforementioned footage / images we
can form a view, as the actual match footage is completely
inconclusive.

Firstly, it looks like it should have been a goal, based on the
still photograph. The video serves no purpose to determine
either way.
Given that Player no 30 is entirely between the Assistant and
the ball and that the ball could have still been entirely behind
his body and not fully over the line, I'm not sure how you
expect the Assistant to determine it's a goal. If he's not sure,
and how could he be, he can't in all fairness give a goal. You
win some; you lose some ! Move on.

The video shows the ball bouncing behind the line. I have seen
plenty of mistakes by officials (and considerably more by
players) and I can often understand why the mistakes are made. I
just cannot understand this one however much posters on here try
to justify it. Sorry.

Whilst they are gradually implementing more and more technology
in football, they haven't yet found a way of giving match
officials x-ray vision. The defender's body is clearly between
the AR and the ball, if he can't see the ball he can't give a
goal.
He will still get an incorrect KMD, assuming the observer can be
100% sure it was over the line, but I can definitely see why it
was missed.
