       Bromley v Port Vale

Brief discussion about the ghost goal in this game on Ref Watch.
I was at the game and was behind the goal in question. Not only
was the ball a good 18 inches over the line, the defender
actually pulled it back with his hand! The Assistant later
claimed he couldn’t be sure if the ball had crossed the line yet
there is photo evidence of the defender in the net and the ball
nowhere to be seen because it was behind him! It was the worst
decision I have ever seen live.

To be fair, the Bromley player was blocking the assistant's view
of where the ball was. He can't just guess!

I've heard this argument but the defender was behind the line so
where did the assistant think the ball was??

His feet are behind the line but he is also leaning forward. If
the AR was behind the corner flag I can easily see why the
defender's bulk might have stopped him being sure the ball had
crossed the line. The camera angle isn't really at all
conclusive, needs one from behind the corner flag and AR to give
       a better view.

For anyone who has been an assistant referee at a high level
these things happen so quickly, easy to make a hindsight
       decision. It’s a human error.

It doesn't matter where he 'thinks' it was.

I can understand folk sticking up for the officials here but the
fact is the assistant could not see the ball. There is clear
photographic evidence of this. The defender was in the net - I
was right behind the goal and could see him pull the ball back
out of the goal with his hand. It was either a goal or a penalty
and a red card. I have no idea why neither the assistant nor the
ref could see either of these. If we are prepared to allow
officials to make these sort of mistakes the game has gone.

If there is clear photographic evidence perhaps it would be a
good idea to share it, or a location where we can find it.
Also, if you were behind the goal how could you possibly see
that it had crossed the line?

Plus if behind the goal was the only unobstructed view then
       officials would have no chance
Yet again officials blamed - have you also been on the offending
clubs website demanding their defender admit to what they did?

       I'm a tad confused.
(Nowt new there then you might, correctly say)
If, as is stated, the AR cannot clearly see, would you prefer
       that they guess?
I'm a bit long of tooth but was always told that if I couldn't
see 100% then I MUSTN'T award anything. Perhaps things have
       changed??
