I don't usually comment much but considering i too saw James
Durkin's Championshp debut i'll comment my thoughts. I thought
Geoff looked off during his warmup but he didn't seem to pull up
but wish him all the best! For starters i think James for an
unexperienced referee (For the league Only 2 League 1 games with
more League 2) I thought we did well considering. I agree with
the above comment about the red card however a player knows they
cannot raise thier elbow to an opponents face, but yes i see
both sides of the argument.
Intresting to know that Kevin Friend thier for support and Dale
Randlall stood up as 4th official after an announcment on a
tannoy asking for a qualified official. Maybe Geoff wasn't 100%
before the match but why not just drop out? Who knows but i
don't think James did himself no harm with a respectable
peformance in a game which was tight and may of got out of
control.

Eltringham off injured at Cardiff on 19 mins…
James Durkin on… a debut in the Championship for him?
Yes a Championship debut for James Durkin, I believe he had a
few league two trial games last season but this season is his
first as an official EFL Referee.
No easy introduction to Championship football for him, he sent
off Cardiff’s Callum Robinson soon into the second half. I was
at the game and the red card seemed to be a surprise to lots in
the crowd and also the players. Robinson’s arm made clear
contact to the face of the Coventry player during a
challenge/coming together but in my opinion it lacked the
necessary intent and aggression for a red card/violent conduct.
I think most referee’s would have given a yellow in this
instance.
Kevin Friend (SG2 manager) was also at the match and came down
to the touch line to speak to Geoff Eltringham following his
injury and oversaw the change of referee process etc.
Welsh League referee Dale Randall came out of the crowd to
replace James Durkin as Fourth Official. Dale referee’s in the
league below the Welsh Premier and has taken charge of Welsh Cup
matches in recent season’s.
Could Friend have taken over as fourth official if there was no
one else?
I wondered that too. I guess it might have had an impact on his
assessor duties but he probably could have as a last resort.

Dear Mr Geoff Eltringham,
You have had a very good career that everyone would be proud of.
Sometimes, no matter how well we eat the right thing, drink the
right stuff, follow the rigours exercise to the t, our body just
let us down. It’s probably time to think about the future and
preserve your physical and mental wellbeing. Your experience
would be fully appreciated by these 'newbies/inexperience’
Referees on the block, either as a Coach or an Observer.
Ironically, one of the newbies took over your role when the body
gave way again. Getting injured too often, working hard to get
back to full fitness and then boom, it happens again. We all
want to run around forever but we must listen to our body and
move on when the time is right. I’m sure everyone is wishing
you all the best, either continuing as a Referee or in another
role.

There was an interview on the BBC 6 o'clock News this evening
with Dale Randall who was due to referee lcocally until the game
was called off and decided to go to Cardiff City instead. Seemed
a nice guy. I wonder who the last person was from Wales to
officiate in an EFL or EPL game?

Interestingly, Ceri Willams is currently an assistant referee on
Welsh Premier matches as well as EFL (National
List) matches and WSL.

Before Ceri Williams, it would have been Ceri Richards, who was
a SG1 assistant until 2013.
Here is the BBC write up on Dale Randall, which is similar to
the TV news report.

Ceri Richards was the one I was referring to. He was a Welsh
FIFA ref but was Prem League AR
Got the call up to the FA Cup final in Cardiff when Peter Kirkup
suffered an eye infection (in the days before a reserve AR)
