       Newcastle v Liverpool: A Madley

I thought he did ok in what was a frantic second half.
Liverpool’s penalty shout against Burn was correctly not given
in my view, and the Isak one, I’m happy with refs call on that.
I did find it odd he blew for full time when he did though.
Great game to watch, with some great goals as well.

It did look odd blowing up when he did and indeed Pope got
booked for his protest because it was a promising attack.
However, I can understand why he did especially as it was that
sort of game. He blew on time according to the clock.

He should have played on. Most of the added time was taken up by
a sub and a VAR review at least 3 minutes. But he blew 10
seconds after the 5. Poor time management

At least he didn’t blow up if the ball was heading into the net
       like Kettle did famously!

You’re right and lots do it (especially abroad) - it’s wrong (as
time can’t possibly always be on an exact minute, but it also
actually just causes problems as then people expect it in all
games and any goals after that time are somehow seen as
controversial. I wish refs would consistently make up the time
lost (often deliberately) during additional time which would end
       that.

I looked up the Laws regarding the duration of the game and I
was surprised how often time should be added - time wasting,
substitutions etc. Maybe we need a stadium clock and an
       independent time keeper.

There is an interesting analysis by Sky of the stoppage time
during this game. In the five minutes and ten seconds that was
played, after five had been indicated, the ball was in play for
one minute and 59 seconds. During stoppage time there were two
VAR checks, one lasting 21 seconds, the other 54, One minute and
ten seconds passed with no action while Newcastle set up a free
kick on the edge of the Liverpool penalty area.

So is additional time an absolute figure? 5 minutes regardless?
That is what it appears to be in this instance yet I am sure the
LOTG allow additional time to additional time. Baffling really.

Surely it does, one of the duties of the referee is to add time
where it is lost for the specified reasons. It does not state
that this only applies in the original 45 minutes. If time is
lost during "added time" and it is for one of the specified
reasons, it should also be added on.
Maybe the wider footballing world needs a refresher that the
number of minutes shown is a minimum amount of added time. If
five minutes are shown the start point could (in theory) be 5
minutes and 59 seconds; this could then increase if further
       added time is required.
Sometimes having more information causes more problems than not
       - maybe ignorance really is bliss!!

I still am a firm believer that the time should be managed like
it is in rugby, with an independent time keeper monitoring
proceedings and managing any additional time required.
