The dreaded letter - (he was born in July 1937 so was 47 years,
       10 months)
       F.L. 28th May 1985
       Dear Mr. Spencer,
The Management Committee recently considered their list of
officials for season 1985-86 and I have to inform you that as
you will have reached retiring age by the commencement of the
season it was decided not to include your name on the list.
I have been instructed to convey to you the Management
Committee's sincere thanks for the valuable service you have
rendered to the Football League, its competitions and to the
       game in general.
       Yours sincerely, Graham Kelly
and from the Football Association -
       F.A. 3rd June 1985
       Dear Trevor,
I have been advised by the Secretary of the Football League that
due to the fact that you have reached retiring age you will not
be retained on the Football League's Referees list for next
       season.
May I take this opportunity of thanking you for the service you
have rendered to football and the Football Association in
particular. I am sure that you have enjoyed your involvement in
the game, and will in fact, continue to do so.
With best wishes for the future.
       Yours sincerely, Ted Croker
Spencer became a Supplementary Referee for 1970-71 and in that
season he refereed 7 matches, all in Div 4
At the end of it he was promoted to the full list and for the
next two seasons was mainly in charge of Div 3 matches (4-8-23-9
       by Division)
Perhaps he was then thought of for higher things as the next
three seasons saw him mainly in Div 1 (29-18-17-11)
However 1976-77 saw him mainly in Div 4 (4-5-4-8)
The next four seasons saw him spread fairly evenly (24-27-28-22)
1981-82 and 1982-83 had him mostly in Div 3 and less in Div 4
       (13-12-17-7)
His last two F.L. seasons stats are still to be obtained.

TREVOR DAVID SPENCER 1937-2010 (Bellringing in his retirement)
Trevor learned to ring at Stratford sub Castle, Salisbury, soon
after the bells were installed as a millennium project in 1998
and remained a regular Sunday service ringer until his untimely
death. He progressed in his ringing through ringing his first
"quarter on the Tenor behind" to "hunting the Treble" to any
suitable method and ringing plain courses of "Grandsire Doubles
       inside".
He made himself available to help other towers, not only for
weddings but for service ringing. Trips away with his beloved
caravan and foreign holidays were the only things, apart from
baby sitting his grandchildren, which kept Trevor from service
       ringing.
Trevor was born and bred in Basingstoke where his father was
manager for the Wiltshire and Dorset Bus Company. He was
apprenticed to the engineers Thornycroft. Trevor did his
National Service at Netheravon and Wootton Bassett where he met
and married Joan (nee Beeson). Always interested in sport, he
rose to be a football referee at First Division level, the
       highest league in those days.
The writer attended, and has a programme of, a Stoke City v QPR
match in 1974 that Trevor refereed. Trevor also recounted the
occasion that he was linesman at a match between Barcelona and
       Ajax.
He later joined Castrol as a technical advisor, advising garages
on car lifts amongst other things, until his retirement.
Trevor rang for and attended Christmas midnight communion at
Stratford and rang for the Christmas morning service before
going to stay with his younger daughter, Beverley, in Devizes.
Beverley is married to Nick Bancroft, a ringer and son of John
Bancroft, past captain of Chilmark tower and now a Melksham
       ringer.
On Boxing Day morning Trevor experienced leg pains but, since it
was a Sunday, did not trouble the medical profession. The
following day he collapsed and, despite being flown to Salisbury
Hospital, died of a pulmonary embolism.
On a bitterly cold January day Stratford sub Castle church was
full to overflowing for the funeral service as was a marquee
erected outside. The bells were rung, unmuffled at his widow’s
request, before the service and as the coffin was carried to the
       graveside.

I don't remember seeing Trevor live, but he did appear from time
to time on MOTD or The Big Match, and Liverpool FC stats show
that he refereed four Liverpool games between 1974 and 1980, all
in Div 1. Thirteen seasons on the EFL list as a referee, so
obviously a sound top flight referee.
