Gavin Ward - Sheffield Utd v Sunderland

Just coming up to half time as I write this and I think Gavin
Ward has done well. Both KMI’s correct and has tried to let the
game flow, but stepped in when needed.

I’m obviously biased but the attackers touch is away from goal
and there’s a covering defender about 4 yards away so to me
that’s not a red as the striker has to take control and turn
when the defender will be in position

That was my first reaction but the ball didn't travel far and so
the defender wouldn't have got there before the attacker. It was
a clumsy tackle and the taking out of the attacker makes it
difficult for the referee to judge where he would have been but
for the tackle. Imho, had the attacker been allowed to stay on
his feet, he would have been closer to the ball and more likely
to get a shot off.

I think it’s one that’s very much a judgement call and with one
look I can see why the ref went that way with one look, striker
gets the ball first but the shot would be no different to any
other time there’s a defender between ball and goal

What is the point in added time if it can just be wasted? The
ball was in play about 5 seconds of the 1st minute and out of
play pretty much all of the time over the 4 minutes including 2
bookings for time wasting and a substitution

Red card for Souttar obviously correct. The red for Mepham is
wrong for me, the touch from the attack is significantly away
from goal that it cannot be an obvious goal scoring opportunity.
I believe Ward has realised he could have played advantage and
then cautioned later, but instead has blown early and then felt
obliged to show red.
