Sam Barrott - Southampton v Liverpool

Isn't the Sugawara penalty incorrect? If it deflects off another
body part before touching the arm, its not supposed to be a
handball. PLmatchcentre says Oliver on VAR thought it was
deliberate, I think thats extremely harsh to the point of it
being a misjudgement.
I get that Sugawara is responsible for his body and its
extremely clumsy and therefore a decision that will be accepted,
but do we think its correct according to LOTG?

It not being handball if it first deflected off the player's
body was taken out of law a few years ago. If the arm isn't in
a position suitable for the footballing action being performed
it is deemed to be deliberate handling.

Pity he couldn't see the clear foul on Armstrong by Kelleher.
Perhaps he was too busy looking for knee on knee.

I think Lallana was very fortunate not to have had his yellow
card reviewed by VAR. Challenges like that have routinely been
red cards as he endangered an opponent. The typical clueless
comments on Sky that the referee knows “he’s not that type of
player” really don’t help.

I thought the handball penalty was extremely harsh.
I also have no idea how a foul was given against the Southampton
striker who was having his shirt pulled and was then clearly
taken out by the Liverpool keeper.
The penalty given to Southampton looked incredibly tight to me,
and I think it was outside the box, but there was not conclusive
proof so I understand why the on-field decision was stuck to.

In a sense I am pleased that VAR didn't intervene, no
rerefereeing the game. Mischievously, given that Michael Oliver
was VAR, maybe after his experience in the West Ham v Manchester
United game he felt discretion was the better part of valour and
kept a low profile.
I've not watched Sam Barrott much but he looks the part. 2
penalties which were debatable and one claim turned down, again
debatable. In these cases it is what the referee gives that
matters and I cannot say the referee was wrong. There again, I
do not understand the LOTG, particularly their interpretation
and the guidelines issued to referees.

I thought Barrott did well yesterday. In fairness, in real time
it looked like a handball and despite there being a primary
contact not on the arm, the extended secondary contact on the
arm sealed the deal.
Barrott may not have seen the primary contact onto arm but I
think VAR was correct in not coming in to recommend an overrule.
I still think Barrott will be donning a white badge pretty soon,
and it would be fully deserved, unlike some of the previous
badges handed out wrongfully in my view.

Dale Johnson supports the decisions in this game and the actions
of the VAR in each case. His rationale makes sense and to me
reinforces how difficult it is to referee matches. Johnson feels
that Kelleher was lucky, his action being a foul but the referee
blew for a previous offence by the Southampton forward.
In fact VAR had a good weekend though he feels that the foul by
Ndidi on Palmer says more about the attitude to serious foul
play in the English top flight. That is I assume, more tolerant,
with a higher threshold than in other competitions.

My views on handball penalty decisions in recent seasons are
well rehearsed - both on here and to Mrs Leggy's despair.
However, this looked - to me - like an "old fashioned" handball
where the defender mis-controlled the ball, panicked and his arm
moved towards the ball. Probably an involuntary movement, but
one that has to be deemed deliberate. Player reaction
(especially the offender) was also a big giveaway.
