I am! Was that the late 1-0? I wasn’t there that night
(typically!)
My impression is that there’s more “Northern” based referees
than Southern referees, so we see the same names more than most
clubs. Carl Brook and Sam Purkiss especially are usually good
for at least 2 U’s games a season. Carl is usually one of the
safest pair of hands around in my experience.

It was, that was a long journey home haha. I think you’re right
but I imagine that applies to most clubs. We seem to get Ross
Joyce (M’boro) at Valley Parade every 8-10 games. Fine by me as
he’s imo the best on national list but does seem a bit
imbalanced. I understand the reasons though

The system or Mr Joyce as imbalanced? Or both?? 😀

I've seen Carl brook a few times. Almost a throwback to a
different era of officiating and a very good thing too. I'm sure
he's not technically anywhere near the best but he has a feel
for the game which makes for really good officiating.

Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team) v Notts County F.C. (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Copeland, Steven
Assistant Referee: McILravey, Ryan Gough, Callum
Assistant Referee: Wilding, Darren
Fourth Official: Ford, Declan
Oh dear, oh dear, Mr Copeland. For sixty minutes, you were the
best I've seen at Gresty Road in a long time, with your gorgeous
yellow shirt shining as a beacon of light in the gathering
gloom. And then you spoiled it by awarding a penalty to Crewe
which was, at best, dubious and, at worst, frankly ludicrous.
What you saw in the challenge in the penalty area, I don't know,
but it certainly didn't look like a penalty to me or, I have to
say, the die-hard home fans alongside me in the Main Stand. What
the County fans thought of the award is probably not printable.
In fairness, you picked yourself up and there were few if any
complaints about the red card to the Crewe sub, who had only
just come on to the field, for a nasty lunge. And the yellow
cards were spot on as well. A great pity but I hope we may see
more of you on the EFL as, one incident apart, you were very
good.
Steven Copeland - good to see a more mature looking 'newbie' at
CA and he reminded me of Jon Moss, Scott Duncan and Carl Brook
in appearance and style. His authoritative style of refereeing
blended in well and helped to make it an entertaining afternoon
for fans of both sides. I am sure we shall see more of him.
The A500 derby at Port Vale next Monday, 1st v 2nd, should be a
corker. Wonder who we'll get for this one? Another 'newbie'
perhaps?!

Notts won’t like that after last season’s debacle in the same
fixture! Well done to Crewe, flying high again this year.
Colchester United FC (First Team) v Bradford City FC (First
Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Brook, Carl
Assistant Referee: Block, Jonathon
Assistant Referee: Bradley, Alex
Fourth Official: Da Costa, Anthony
Unfortunately, “old reliable Carl” let me down a bit today. I’ve
tried to distance my blue and white tinted glasses from my
thoughts on his performance, but even then, I think he was off
the mark today.
Bradford’s first hurry up from Carl was certainly in the first 5
minutes, possibly twice in that time and their desire to have a
game with the ball in play didn’t get any better, which always
puts pressure on a referee from a home crowd. Several yellows
were issued in the second half but once those players were on
yellows, Carl wasn’t interested in issuing a second, so the
players were quite confident to test their luck. This (combined
with 4 or 5 Bradford “injuries” - one of which Carl simply
shrugged to the crowd as if to say “I know what’s happening but
I can’t do anything!) led to 10 minutes added time, so well
done to Carl for at least adding the time on, although I would
rather have seen that time in the 90 minutes.
As for the rest of his performance, a strong penalty shout for
Colchester in the first half - replays are inconclusive for me,
gut feel is that it should have been but I can’t say for
definite. Quite a lot of pushing and shoving at set pieces,
which I think Carl dealt with well and issued bookings where
needed for Cook and Taylor. AR1 gave an incorrect goal kick when
the ball had stayed in and was live in the penalty area, so a
mark down for him in that moment.
In fairness to the team, Bradford forced them to referee a game
in a way they probably didn’t want, but it led to frustrating
viewing from a spectators view. A point earned by Colchester
very late on, with a feeling of a bit of well earned karma
following Bradford’s gamesmanship!

I agree with you Acme. He had a solid game overall besides the
penalty. With the yellow cards, and particularly the one on our
keeper, he never gave him any warning at all. Could this booking
then be considered slightly harsh?
Do you think that we will have SG2 next Monday? Or some
experienced refs like Ben Toner, Scott Oldham etc. Will be good
to see who it is and best of luck to them! I will be at home
watching this game!

Haven't seen or read a report of the match so don't know if all
were justified or not. It equals though the greatest number of
yellow cards I have ever seen issued in one match, which took
place several years ago now at the old Boleyn Ground. I forget
who West Ham's opponents were on that day but not the name of
the referee who was Martin Bodenham.
