I have refrained from posting until now. I have known David
since he was 15. He is a friend, and always will be.
David had time for everyone, completely dedicated to his
profession. Yes he has made serious mistakes which has cost him
his profession.
Very few Referees both now and former in Nottinghamshire have a
bad word for David.

Very sad to see it end like this but as poster said his guilt
has been found likely on balance of all the evidence. Had he
been found not guilty, could he have come back like Clattenburg
and others before? Possibly, likely not, however based on what
we know his employment was untenable. He jas made a catastrophic
error and he has to face the punishment for that. Hopefully the
PGMOL can assist him in looking for future employment elsewhere.
It's a sad day for the refereeing community and has done a lot
of outside damage. It reminds me a little bit of Dean Mohareb
who was a cracking young ref local to me.
Edited , that paragraph was totally unnecessary. Any repeat will
see action taken !

My main feeling now is one of sympathy for David Coote, even if
I agree with the PGMOL decision.
I cannot sit in judgement. I am sure many referees have made
disparaging comments about a manager (myself included), I am
sure many have used drugs and I am sure many have joked about a
decision they gave against a team. None of these things make me
think less of David Coote as a human being, they strike me as
totally normal human follies, which many of us are guilty of.
Unlike many of us though, David Coote has had some of his worst
moments broadcast to the world. Shame on those who saw fit to do
so. In a more ideal, fair minded, but unfortunately unrealistic
world we could say that all referees have personal views, it is
silly to think they don't, we accept they can put them aside.
Perhaps we could accept that many people use drugs, and offer
support rather than utter condemnation. And we could appreciate
a jokey remark is not an indication of corruption.
Sadly though, we do not live in that world - and David Coote
knows that. His actions have destroyed his own reputation among
large swathes of the public and he has damaged the perception of
all referees too. Unfairly so, in my view, but it is undeniable
this is the effect of what he has done. Referees must not only
be fair, be seen to be fair, they must be seen to have ultimate
personal integrity - now more than ever, when empathy is at an
all time low. David Coote chose to do what he did and however
cruel, he must go.
I am just so sorry that an almost 30 year journey in refereeing
has ended like this. I feel so bad that someone who has achieved
so much and unquestionably worked so hard so much taken away
from them - even if they themselves are to blame. There are no
winners.
I wish David Coote every success going forward. I'm so sorry
this all happened.

I feel very sorry for him. Due to some terrible lapses of
judgment on two separate occasions he has lost his job. There I
guess was no option, I don’t see how he could bounce back with
scrutiny and his reputation in tatters.
However, these guys are under so much pressure it surprises me
that this has not happened previously within SG1. I just hope he
is given space, time to heel and that his former colleagues and
bosses reach out to him. The fact that he has shown weakness
does not make him a bad person.
One last thought, another person in Nottingham got a paltry
stadium ban for spitting at a referee. Due to Mr Coote being a
referee there is a higher burden of accountability arguably, but
I know what is worst in my eyes.

one of the 2 smiths or even donohue most likely, for me it would
be josh smith.lewis smith hasn’t impressed me when I seen him
but he’s still very young.havnt seen donohue much but he’s got a
few trial games and also a new var.(sorry gone off topic)

Looking at it as an outsider I don't think you can compare
Madley and Coote
Madleys comments where abhorrent, offensive and dealt with -
these were not aimed at someone with whom he has had contact,
was going to meet regularly or was within the confines of his
employment
I am sure if I was filmed bad mouthing the manager of anyone
within our supply chain, suppliers or even competitors and it
became public knowledge, I too would be sacked - the business
would have to distance itself from my comments
Would you, as a referee, try to do games at a local level
knowing the grief you would get? I think I would quit all
involvement
I hope Mr Coote and his family receive all the support they need
so he can move on and forward

I really feel for David. Whilst he's never been one of my
favourite SG referees, the fact his career has been snatched
away from him is a hard pill to swallow, however naive his
comments were.
I hope he's able to rebuild elsewhere and thrive away here.

It was clear that some sort of disciplinary action was needed
and that, in my opinion, he could not continue as a member of
SG1, but the man has talents an abilities that should not be
lost. Would it not be possible to downgrade him to a "desk job"
where he could help younger referees to realise their potential
and maybe also warn them of the problems that he fell into ?
That would show that the PGMOL was taking action but may also be
of benefit to the welfare of the man involved.

I think probably a wise decision not to prolong the pain and
only delay the inevitable. I hope 2025 brings more happiness for
him and that he is successful in rebuilding his career.
