Wolves v Southampton - Thomas Bramall
DIR By: Craven

This was arguably the most controversial game of the weekend,
and certainly had one of the biggest talking points, namely
Southamptons disallowed goal.
Just my opinion of course, but that is one of the worst VAR
referrals I’ve witnessed. No way can that collision be
classified under the ‘clear and obvious’ bar. The Wolves
defender steps into the Southampton player, puts his leg across
him and initiates the contact. The correct decision is play on,
which is exactly what Bramall did. A different Southampton
player then belts the ball into the net. That should be the end
of the matter and a goal awarded.
Why VAR then decides to get involved is a mystery. If anything,
although I don’t believe it’s a foul either way, the more likely
outcome would have been a penalty (although obviously this was
negated by Southampton scoring). The referral is bizarre, and I
so wish Bramall had stuck to his guns at the monitor. But as we
all know, that doesn’t happen.
Really hope this incident is included in the next Mic’d Up show,
would love to hear Howard’s opinion on it.

Just checked (which I should have done before posting to be
fair), it was Chris Kavanagh.

To add to the first post, the second Wolves goal should have
been disallowed for two fouls on Saints players, both that were
more of a foul than the one involved in the actual disallowed
goal. All missed by Bramall and Kavanagh.
Not good enough, again.

Those decisions were very poor especially the second foul.

There is all this talk and waffle coming out of PGMOL towers
suggesting that “referees call” should be the fundamental
denominator when it comes to border line decisions, however it
seems particularly prevalent in recent weeks that VAR has been
coming in unnecessarily and without merit.
It really doesn’t help the on field team when big brother comes
along and tells them to go to the screen, because it must surely
place doubt and second thoughts that their decision in real time
is flawed.
Plus, this season we’ve had no instance where the on field
official has stuck with his decision and unceremoniously told
VAR to bugger off!

Instead of this inconsistency of “referees call”I would love to
have the situation if there’s anything 50:50 the ref comes over
to the monitor anyway and decides for himself.atleast then the
ref won’t feel pressured to go with vars call.(I know it’ll slow
game slightly but it’s better to get more consistency)

Don’t think fans want or would appreciate a stop /start match
for consistency while referees go to the monitor they have had
enough of it as it is - personally I think there was more
consistency before VAR and I would get rid of VAR and let
football be football and the fans enjoy it again as VAR causes
far more problems than it solves , before VAR referees were more
consistent yes they made mistakes they were generally accepted
though but with VAR and the number of cameras and angles they
have mistakes are highlighted and debated to death in the press
, on football shows and all over social media week in week out
and still they get decisions wrong and involved unnecessarily

I've watched this game in its entirety and to be fair to Tom
Bramall he was consistent throughout with his foul threshold and
interpretation so the challenges that led to the Cunha goal were
'the norm' for the game and weren't being given, which led to
quite a free flowing game.
I think the VAR intervention was correct, it was a foul on
Semedo, forearm and foot making contact, which the referee
missed. Semedo does step across to prevent the Southampton
player getting to the ball but that isn't a foul, he is entitled
to shield the ball.
Southampton were unfortunate as they had the majority of
possession but didn't have another shot on goal after the
disallowed goal.

I must admit I am a supporter of VAR and I cannot agree that
there was more consistency before VAR was introduced. How many
VAR 'decisions' do we now see accepted, perhaps with a shrug of
the shoulders, even though the offside or whatever has been
tight? Beach balls and red cards for handling shots going wide
come to mind and these and others would surely have been sorted
by VAR, would they not? At times, I have wished that VAR could
be extended down, for example Sunny Singh Gill's refusal to give
Crewe a late penalty v Salford, which was dreadful and cost
Crewe two valuable points, but I accept that this is not going
to happen anytime soon. I agree fully that consistency is needed
with VAR, and either the bar is set high or it is not, we cannot
have both. Other than that, I feel we should continue with VAR.
I only saw the highlights of course, but I got the impression
that Thomas Bramall never looked comfortable at Wolves, and I
certainly agree that the second challenge prior to the second
Wolves goal looked like a foul and should perhaps have been
acted on. But maybe that's me lowering the bar unnecessarily.
