Another poor performance from Coote… the first half shenanigans
when the clear DOGSO foul was waved away, and some other bizarre
judgements quantify this sub standard showing.
The second half was a bit calmer to start with, then the general
theme of random decisions continued, plus the offside flag
debacle.
I would certainly put Coote down the bottom of the current crop
of SG 1 officials.

They must be able to right? VAR can intervene for straight reds
so I presume if he missed they would have said to have another
look. I’m certain on the Mic’d Up programme there have been
incidents where VAR have checked for DOGSO. I might be wrong…

Yes, VAR can intervene for DOGSO.

As a Villa fan i write:
Quote my reaction in the appointments thread earlier this week.
“ Oh dear, if going to Anfield after a thrashing last weekend
was bad enough to top it off the man in the middle is ….”
Unquote.
I cant honestly say any decisions he made had a direct effect on
the result, the team that took their chances just about deserved
to win a very entertaining game.
Coote was poor in his foul detection for both sides alike, when
watching games he referees i am not sure he knows what he is
going to determine is a foul.
His hand signals leading up to the first goal would lead one to
think Bailey hadnt fouled Salah, surely var would have
intervened if the striker had missed the target but then
nowadays would they?
He appeared to be intimating he penalised Watkins for a pull on
a Liverpool defender when Watkins ended up on the floor in the
penalty area, if so he must have seen something i didnt. I
thought it was a natural coming together where the Liverpool
defender was stronger but not a pull.
Most posters on this thread i think have summed up his
performance very well.
Two things i will defend him on, regardless of his poor
performance the game was still very entertaining and secondly
the decision not to blow for offside immy in the Villa penalty
area when AR2 (Taylor?) flagged was correct and an error by the
assistant in flagging too soon. The player offside was very
central and i am sure he should be delaying the flag in this
instance. Being new to the premier league with var in use i
think he will learn from this error.

good summary of cootes performance.ill disagree with ya though
on the offside,I thought officials were instructed to put up the
flag if it’s a clear offside(correct me in I’m wrong) and he was
Atleast a yard off

Completely disagree with the offside - this is not what they are
told. Howard Webb has said publicly many times that assistants
are told to flag straight away if the offside is clear, wherever
it happenson the pitch. The Liverpool player was clearly offside
and the assistant correctly flagged. Coote got it completely
wrong by delaying.

I was at the game and Coote was exactly as I expected him to be.
He always looks lost somehow.
He clearly believes that Mo Salah can’t be fouled. There were
numerous occasions when he was held by Villa players and Coote
just ignored it, the most obvious one being the first goal and
any apologists for him saying he played advantage are wrong: he
clearly indicated no foul. Justice was served but no thanks to
the referee.
The foul given in Liverpool’s penalty area was bizarre. From my
my seat I thought it was for simulation but no card and no
indirect free kick signal confused me. I saw it on MOTD when I
got home and I’m even more confused. There was nothing there at
all even if the Villa player went down a little theatrically.
There were several other decisions he made that were frankly
baffling but including a clear foul on Bradley for which he
managed to award Villa a free kick.
I’ve seen Coote many times and I’ve never been impressed at all.
His foul detection and match control just aren’t adequate. He
simply isn’t, in my opinion, of the standard needed at this
level.

The bizarre thing is that UEFA clearly view him as 2nd best VAR
behind Attwell, despite many mistakes on VAR too, and no doubt
he'll pick up more TV games after the break.

It also makes a mockery of how he got a FIFA badge in the first
place.
Our learn’d contributor Whistleblower quite rightly mentioned a
while back that these prestigious badges aren’t as well
recognised as they should be, and that they are handed out like
confetti, to officials whom don’t possess the required
attributes and ability to rightfully earn one.
They should be a badge of accomplishment and recognition.

At one stage recently it was a case of making numbers up from
eligible candidates, but not so in the last few seasons as a few
were asked to step aside.
The ones stepping aside were duly rewarded for their
unselfishness.
Think onfield we are just about right with our FIFA/UEFA
referees but var does leave a bit to be desired.
Thought Coote was a run of the mill referee when in sg2 and
probably lucky to reach that standard but that shows what i
know.
He dis seem to be fast tracked after spending a little time on
the sidelines in past.
[/quote]
I didn’t see Coote until he arrived in the Premier League but
based on your opinion I think you might be a better judge than
whoever decided he’s SG1 standard.
