M ATKINSON - Wolves v Man U

Just turned the tv on to see an red card overturned by VAR. I
have to say that was a wild late challenge which could have
easily broken the players ankle with the speed and angle of the
challenge but it went yellow.
Can understand why Atkinson went red though at full speed. The
linesman must've said something to him.

I would have thought that it should be the on field Referees
decision as to overturning a red card as it is a matter of
opinion not fact so surely Atkinson should have watched it
himself pitchside and made his own mind up

In contrary to the rest of the world, they're not using VAR like
that in England generally - the referee will take the advice of
VAR and only look at the monitor in exceptional circumstances.
In this case, I would have been leaning towards yellow but would
perhaps have been a good one for Atkinson to have a second look
at himself as it's a more marginal decision.

I would have thought that with VAR in its infancy that all
associations using it should be doing the same.
One of the reasons why UEFA are only using certain officials in
the Champs Lgue is to "ensure" consistency of use and
application

The VAR protocol allows for either system to be used - I think
they started off with the UK approach in Germany initially but
then changed to using On-Field Reviews. The UK seems to have
gone the other way - OFRs were used initially (Craig Pawason did
one in the Liverpool V West Brom game) but it was seemingly felt
it delayed the game too much. Supposedly at the start Mike Riley
had favoured using OFRs but Richard Schudamore preferred they
generally not be used and I read a report suggesting most SG
referees preferred to not use OFR, reasoning that they took the
advice of their colleagues on decisions every week anyway.

thats exactly what i thought should happen in that case, and
needs to see it in real time as in my opinion the challenge was
late with no intention of getting the ball from a frustrated
player whose team was losing.

Hackett has had a right old winge on twitter about it. He says
it was red all day long and the differences between how VAR is
utilised in different countries is ridiculous.

I think that our SG1 referees have more confidence in their VAR
colleagues than some other countries. They feel that they can
take their advice and act accordingly, whereas some of the other
leagues, the OFR may not have the confidence to accept what the
VAR says.

It is probably easier than with the World Cup/Champions League
because there are no language barriers and the officials are
used to working together and should have (!) similar
interpretations whereas these aspects might be more problematic
when the VAR is from a different country to the referee.
Dermot Gallagher on Sky said that he was surprised the decision
had been changed. I do think this is a situation where an OFR
would be preferable rather than the referee just having to
change his decision.

Exactly, I think that when he looked at the incident after the
game, Martin Atkinson will have been disappointed that he
changed it on the advice of the VAR Official.
