Josh Smith. Swansea v Watford

Have heard good reports about this referee. Watching the above
game and I have to say I don’t think I have seen a more inept
performance this season from a match official. His foul
detection is so inconsistent and poor causing a lot of player
and spectator frustration. Not a good day at the office. Finding
it hard to understand how bad he has been

Thanks Keith and Matt. I was under the impression that this was
a forum for opinions and everyone was entitled to give theirs
providing they were not abusive. I watched the whole game. Did
you?. If you did please give your opinion instead of making
snide comments. I did not think he was very good hence my post

It is definitely a forum for opinions you just don't ever seem
to have any positive opinions about any referee hence my
comment. I watched the first half and didn't see anything too
wrong. Josh is a very capable referee and I believe he should be
given more of a chance with PL games

I have to say I think if someone wants to post only negative
comments or someone wants to post only positive comments or
whatever in between - as long as the posts are respectful and
follow the rules of our fantastic moderators I see nothing
wrong.
I have seen a number of posts recently criticising posters who
only or predominantly post negatively about referees, suggesting
they shouldn’t do this. I respectfully disagree. I don’t think
posters should feel the need to in any way balance their posts.
I prefer people are honest. If someone feels every performance
they see is unsatisfactory, then so be it, they should be able
to say so, I don’t feel this detracts from the forum. We may not
like this, I don’t agree with many of these posters, but I feel
the best response is to argue, respectfully, as to why they are
wrong.
I feel addressing the substance of negative posts is a far more
effective way of illuminating flaws in the posters argument,
rather than simply stating a poster is always negative. To me
this an easy way to avoid addressing the actual issue, while
still diminishing the validity of what may well be a valid post.

That’s a fair point and I don’t necessarily disagree - but if
someone is finding 90%+ of refereeing performances poor, is it
not a sign to reevaluate their standards? Not saying that’s
what’s happening here as I didn’t watch the game but for
example, if giving the odd throw in the wrong way or penalising
a soft foul in midfield is cause to slam a referee, I doubt
they’ll ever be satisfied!

Thanks for the sensible posts. I have been under the impression
that this referee was bound for PL. Having watched the game live
it wasn’t a case of the odd throw in or foul. He was
consistently poor imo in his foul detection hence my post

Equally I don’t disagree with you my friend! I certainly think
there are posters who should have more realistic expectations -
I just feel we should always play the ball not the man and while
I think calling out a posters negativity is not a direct attack
or inappropriate in any way - I feel it is more effective to
simply discuss the merits.
The most fun I have on this site is reading the wide and diverse
range of views expressed by posters with an eloquence I can only
aspire to. If some are only negative so be it, for me the more
debate the better.

Everyone is 100% entitled to have their say on this forum hence
we all love it. I think we need to take a step back and think
sometimes. Even Observers would find some strengths (positive)
and development areas (negatives) when writing a report. Just
giving someone negative reports all the time is not helpful. No
matter how strong you were, you will get mentally drained from
receiving too much negative feedback.
I guessed it comes down to what we are looking for in a Referee.
