This is one of the worst var decisions of the season.Coote
clearly waves it away.a simple coming together and Oliver
intervenes(not the first time controversially).what happened to
referees call.no way a clear error

In agreement with the above. Personally, I don’t see a penalty
as contact seems expected and unavoidable by normal movement,
and it’s not clear to me that the defender clearly initiates it.
I’ve only see one angle, so perhaps another makes a better case.
Either way, it looks short of the margins we’re expecting for an
OFR. I don’t think decisions like these can be sold to the
public.
The ‘handball’ is a red herring. I’ve no issue there.

I think this is another case where we need to know what the
referee told the VAR he'd seem or not seen. It did look to me
as if de Ligt, even if unintentional, did make contact with Ings
by kicking his leg. If Coote saw the contact but considered it
insufficient for a penalty, then for me it's referee's call and
Oliver shouldn't get involved. If however, Coote said he didn't
have a view of the incident and didn't see the contact on Ings
leg, what does VAR do? Does he make his own decision whether he
considers it a foul? Or does he send Coote to the screen to
watch something he missed, or simply take the view it's not C &
O?

I would agree that Oliver is our best referee but is not the
best VAR by any means. Early in last seasons F A Cup Final
Haarland was bundled over in the area going for a close range
header. Madley chose to ignore it and Oliver didn’t deem it
worthy of a review. To me that was more of a deserving case than
this. Man Utd benefitted on that occasion but not on this one.
Swings and roundabouts maybe but hardly consistent.

If you're bringing that incident up look at the penalty Oliver
referred the referee to in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
Seen many instances since with none given

I think we should bring in a statute of limitations on this
site, if we bring up incidents from seasons ago and compare them
we’ll have thousands of incidents that are kind of similar but
not really similar etc etc. to try and claim inconsistency
over.
As the US Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia used to like to
say when questioned on a controversial judgement from many years
ago - “Get over it!”

De light cleans Ings out of it and surely it's a penalty?

I'd lean towards foul, if it's not in the box that's given every
time. Whether var should be getting involved is another matter

And as long as the discussion is without malice and nasty
remarks made to other posters then I feel we will all have more
freedom to express our opinions.
I am going to stick to my initial thoughts in that is it a
penalty, however I can fully appreciate the views of others and
I applaud the esteemed contributors on here who disagree with
me, being made in a respectful and reasoned manner.
However, I still maintain that Coote is probably lucky to be
plying his trade in SG1, given a lot of his matches do seem to
court controversies.

That one is 100% definitely in the 'leave it with the onfield
decision' camp.
