Am I going crazy or what is the controversy surrounding this? De
light cleans Ings out of it and surely it's a penalty?

Manchester United fans are going bonkers on social media re
this, and simply looking at the video from the poster above, it
is a clear penalty as De Ligt crashes his leg into Ings.
The call for handball against Ings is rubbish as he was in close
contact and an unpredictable bouncing ball in front of him.

I would have to strongly disagree there. The ball is bouncing
and two players are running towards it so a collision is always
going to happen. I don’t see any offence that De Ligt makes and
I think it’s incredibly harsh, especially when Coote didn’t give
it on field. What happened to referees call?
For me that is the worst VAR decision this season as of yet and
Oliver has once again not covered himself in glory. Another
thing is why do on field officials ALWAYS go with what VAR says.
Why can’t Coote stick up for himself. If he’s there for a good
few minutes then don’t give it.
Bottom line is the incident is just a collision and neither
player has committed an offence

I happen to agree with the last poster…..for me that is a
debatable decision. Ings seems to run into the Man United player
and it’s a collision, doesn’t seem to be an offence committed.
If there’s doubt, it should have stayed with the on field call
of no penalty. The VAR intervention not necessary and it’s
stirred up a hornet’s nest. Not a good decision.
One thing I will add, there is a lot of good and healthy
discussion on here and we will always disagree, that’s fine, you
won’t get 100% agreement on most things!

Agree with the last two posters. This looks like a coming
together between two players tussling for the ball. Given the
decision on the field was no penalty this looks like a really
poor intervention by VAR for me.

I rate oliver higher than any other PL referee but oh boy when
it comes to him on VAR he really does drop the ball and makes
poor calls

Cleans him out?. Oliver has made another awful call as VAR

I would sit somewhere in the middle. I believe it is a foul but
I don’t think it meets the standard for an OFR, especially in
the EPL. One could take a reasonable view that it was more a
collision between two players than an act of deliberate foul
play, I think one could equally say it is a careless act by De
Ligt that impedes his opponent and is therefore a penalty.
Neither of these views jumps out as me as obviously right/wrong,
so, for me, VAR should have stayed with the on field call -
unless maybe Coote was totally oblivious to the collision and
had no opinion on it.
I am the first to slate player behaviour but in fairness,
considering the circumstances, De Ligt seemed to have a very
respectful exchange with Coote after the final whistle.
On Oliver has VAR - it does strike me that he is more likely to
intervene in the say 70/30 situations, where I think most VAR
officials won’t get involved unless it’s 85/15 (obviously I’m
making those numbers up, but I hope the point is clear).

Not a penalty for me if not given on the pitch, and VAR should
not be getting involved. In fact, I don’t think it is a penalty
at all.
We have seen far clearer incidents not touched by VAR because of
the on field decision - I can think of several but the Sancho /
Alexander-Arnold one last week for example was much more of a
foul but VAR did nothing.

Imo it's a completely subjective decision. You could argue
penalty, you could argue contact not sufficient enough. I also
think there might have been a touch on the ball from De Ligt
before as well. VAR should always support the referee in this
situation
