Sam Allison Middlesbrough v Bristol City.

As a Sunderland supporter I have nothing at all against
Middlesbrough.FC.......I normally don't care who beats them :)
however looking at BBC FOOTBALL HAVE YOUR SAY on the comments
posted after their match against Bristol City about the referee
Sam Allison I was intrigued by the fact he used to play for
Bristol City before commencing a career as a referee.
Not questioning the fella in any way shape or form but surely
this is a strange appointment.
Just idle curiosity so no need for anyone to get narky

If we can't get narky, then where is the fun? ;)
Being serious though you raise a good point imho. Howard Webb
spoke about this on a podcast recently in reference to the
scheme of ex-players being fast tracked - he didn't really give
a clear answer but seemed to indicate that they would be allowed
to referee teams they played for - maybe.
I think it comes down to culture and acceptance, in rugby there
would be total acceptance of this (and there is regularly)
because there is such a bedrock culture in the game of trusting
the impartiality and integrity of the referee. I don't think
this culture exists in football. But, I am unsure if the best
way to address this cultural issue is to ignore it (referees
will get more stick) or adapt appointments to it (maybe implies
there is validity to questions over integrity).

County cricket also accepts ex players umpiring the counties
they played for.
I guess for some if this wasnt the case they wouldnt get many
appointments lol

You raised an important question so I would expect the FA would
find a solution before some of these ex-footballers being
fast-tracked make it to National List level. The situation is
different though because from what I read, he played for them at
youth level.
What is more intriguing about the appointment was that both he
and the away team travelled from same area all the way to
Middlesborough.

During Covid, he refereed Rochdale v Swindon, so he made the
same journey north as the visitors. Weird appointing!

Farai Hallam has avoided Stevenage thus far in his refereeing
appointments.
