It’s better to err on the side of caution if you don’t have or
not sure of the whole picture in a split second , no doubt Jones
could be sure straight away if it was DOGSO . So better to issue
a YC and then VAR may decide it warrants a OFR with the
possibility to upgrade to a RC better than way than to issue a
RC and then find out it should have been a YC
The fact Jones took his time at the monitor also suggests he
didn’t see the full picture ( if anyone could cover etc )
Personally I think you should always go red and then downgrade
to yellow rather than other way round
I recall a few years ago at a referee in service course a senior
referee was asked if in doubt would he err on the side of going
yellow or going red - he replied quite dead panned "I would err
on the side of getting it right." A tad over simplistic perhaps
but I do think its is better that they just referee as if VAR
wasn't there (aside from delaying whistle/restart of course).

the Bournemouth player have reached the ball to have a run at
goal? I’m in some doubt and can understand why Robert Jones went
for a yellow card initially. There has to be 100% certainty it
was a DOGSO and I’m not sure there was.

While I can sympathise with the referee going yellow having only
one viewing without the benefit of a wide angle shot of the full
situation, I think it's clear on replay that the attacker will
be gaining possession and no defenders will get back to
challenge in time to prevent the OGSO.

The penalty was nailed on, without question so if someone can
enlighten me on why no card of either colour was shown, that
would be good.

Well it can't be DOGSO as it was an attempt to play the ball.
There were a lot of covering defenders back so I'm not even sure
it was SPA, the penalty was probably a better chance than he had
before the foul.

These are very difficult decisions for referees to make, you
have to immediately paint a picture of where everyone was at the
time of the foul. It is easier when the defender(s) are close
to the attacker, but in this case you have White coming from
wide and Raya potentially from deep. So for this reason I can
totally understand why Jones went yellow initially, but with the
benefit of replays it is a clear red card.

Nooo sending a player off then inviting them back on is a
terrible look. It’s always better to er on the side of caution.

As one of the arsenal fans, I want to come on here and say it’s
a red card. I’ve just had a long discussion with my dad and he
can’t see how it should be but I explained all of the criteria
but he still couldn’t see how it was and said modern football is
a shambles

He should have added "at the top level" I watched four games
over the last couple of days at Championship, League One, League
Two and NPL level and all were very enjoyable to watch as a
neutral obsewrver.
Yes, there were the odd 'strange' decisions, however, players
accepted them and got on with the game without the need to tell
the officials how they should be officiating, a rare thing at
the top level.

hi,
as another arsenal supporter, i too feel the saliba decision was
correct - in fact, when the YC was originally shown, i felt he
was lucky as my immediate reaction was RC.
slightly more confused re: the raya penalty incident though -
would of thought that should have merited a card also.
from a consistency point of view, semenyo getting a YC for
delaying the restart was good but the 'foul throw' against
calafiori was perhaps a little pedantic.

gnr

I was surprised by the lack of a yellow initially but watching
replays, whilst it was a foul & the penalty was the correct call
I'm not sure it also warranted a YC. I think on balance the
penalty was punishment enough.

Agree, Gayle. The foul was a genuine attempt to get the ball. It
was also careless on the "careless/reckless/excessive force"
scale, so "no card" was right.
The Saliba incident occurred pretty much in front of me, I
called it yellow when it happened and was surprised to see it
overturned. Watching it back when I got home, it's clearly a
red. Many are saying "why are VAR getting involved, as it's
subjective and onfield call should prevail", can understand that
view but do think a red card was the right outcome.
Thought Jones had a good game, one or two soft ones either way
but no sign of the unconscious Big Club bias so often in
evidence in games like this involving us. Hope to see the same
in a fortnight when we lose to Man City. Lost all 14 PL games
against them so far.
