Whilst I can’t comment on a game I haven’t seen, our Crewe fans
align with my concerns over Sunny’s ability - I do believe a
good ref could be in there but when it goes wrong, it does often
go very wrong for him.
Colchester United FC (First Team) v Cheltenham Town (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Speedie, Benjamin
Assistant Referee: Chard, Michael
Assistant Referee: Mingay, Bradley
Fourth Official: Brown, Stephen
Onto our game… where unfortunately team ref had a poor day in my
eyes. I’ll start with the positives and the better second half,
where Colchester played at a slow tempo against a very defensive
Cheltenham, making for dreadful viewing. Ben looked to
communicate really well, even explaining decisions I disagreed
with in an animated fashion and his timekeeping was fine. One
Cheltenham attack led to 3 fouls by the visitors, only the third
one was awarded and nearly cost Colchester a goal. Both AR’s
made one clear incorrect decision, AR1 awarding a corner rather
than a goal kick and AR2 giving Colchester a throw after they
hoofed it out!
However, to be frank, the first half was a mess from Ben. In my
experience, he lets the game go as much as he can and not for
the first time, he was far too lenient. It became a brawl of
nonstop shirtpulls and pushes with probably 20% of the fouls
being awarded. From a viewing standpoint, it was very poor. A
very strong shirtpull penalty shout was waved away in the first
20 seconds, the only KMI he got wrong for me. He did follow that
up with an excellent denial of a penalty claim with the
Colchester striker putting his feet in the way of the defender
rather than winning a foul.
That rubbish second half from a footballing standpoint saved Ben
I think, I wouldn’t have liked to see players continue in the
same fashion for another half of football. Definite improvements
required from Ben in my view with regards to tolerance and
“setting the tone”.

Blackpool FC (First Team) v Barnsley FC (First Team)
Football League 1
Referee: Howard, Paul
Assistant Referee: Cavanagh, William
Assistant Referee: Gray, Alex
Fourth Official: Kennard-Kettle, Zac
Just eeen on Twitter than Paul stopped the game on 4 mins so
players and officials could join in a round of applause in
memory of Steve Bruce’s grandson. Well done to him!

Football League 2
Referee: Singh Gill, Sunny
Assistant Referee: Williams, Ollie
Assistant Referee: Wilding, Darren

I am going to try to keep my cool writing this but I do not want
to see Sunny referee a Crewe game again. Ever. He was absolutely
awful, for both sides. On a number of times, everyone was left
confused to what he had given. All 3 yellows, all for Salford,
were correctly established and that’s the only bit of praise
that I’m going to give him. Well done to the Crewe players who
kept their discipline, because I certainly wouldn’t have
playing. Not only Sunny, but AR2 as well. The Salford goal
looked offside to me, and I was more a less inline with it. Back
to Sunny now. Inconsistent for both sides with fouls given and
not. Crewe should’ve had a penalty late on in the second half
for the most blatant push you’ll ever see. Only 3 mins were
added on second half, and that was appalling in itself. The
amount of stoppages that happened in this half, mounted to at
least 7 mins added. He lost control of the game basically from
half time onwards. He booked our manager for something I don’t
know(probably for moaning, won’t have been surprised tbf). How
Karl Robinson never got booked was so questionable. Every single
time something went against him, he was in Niall’s (who looks
and has the height of a 12 year old) ear. I lost count the
amount of times Karl was talking to him. Even when a decision
was in his favour, he still had something to complain about!!!
Shocking. There’s a lot more I could say, but I don’t want it
turning into an English essay so I’ll leave it as that.
Final points, he should get a new whistle, it sounded awful. As
the Crewe manager said in his interview “both sides were left
appalled at some of the decisions.” How he got a premier league
game beggars belief. Oh, I know why! For diversity. Whoever the
assessor was, needs to have a right go at Sunny because that
“performance” was far from acceptable. He was booed off, quite
heavily, at full time. And I don’t blame the Crewe fans for
that. A generous 1/10 rating. One of the worst I’ve ever seen at
Gresty Road, and that’s with 2019 David Rock visiting…

While your assessment of the match is informative, it would be
good to take the emotion out of it. So rather than write as an

Oh, it not Observer's job to have a go at the Officials, he or

I tried to take the emotion out of it, but honestly I couldn’t

I’ve got to be honest, I did think it was the Observer’s job to

Of course, you were entitled to shared your opinion. To be
fair, your assessment of matches were informative and good to
read. I'm only pointing to the obvious from your first
paragraph. I hope his observation report reflect his overall
poor performance.

So on that basis, if you have a bad day at work would you expect
your boss to "have a right go at you"? Or would you expect to
be given constructive criticism detailing exactly what was wrong
with your performance? There's a very big difference between
the two.

Yes, I did get there and yes, I agree with everything you have
said. An excellent post in my view. I was hoping to see a win
for Crewe (in my case for the first time in 2024) + a good
performance from Sunny, but in the end, I saw neither. OK, the
referee is ultimately not responsible for the conduct of the
players on the field, but Sunny's lack of consistency made it
easy for the players to engage in pushing and shoving, tripping
and and endless squabbling, knowing that they would probably get
away with it, which they did in most instances. I was
particularly incensed when a Crewe player was hacked down in the
first half and Sunny looked as though he was playing an
advantage (which wasn't there) but then failed to pull play back
when the advantage didn't materialise and, even worse, failed to
caution the Salford player when play was next stopped. A caution
was correctly given for kicking the ball away, but this was the
third such instance. And, as for the late penalty shout for
Crewe, how that was not a penalty, I really don't know. I
disagree with you in one respect only, I don't think the Salford
goal was offside, rather a lack of basic defending and a Salford
player who was quick off the mark to latch on to a ball through
the middle and score with some ease. At the end, and with both
sets of fans chanting "you're not fit to referee", I thought
back to last season and wondered why and how it had all gone
wrong for Sunny. Perhaps some words of advice from his dad would
be better than an observer's comments on this performance which
was frankly not good enough.
[/quote]
Thank you for your post. I thought it was offside at the time,
and then I saw a screenshot on twitter (X) and it shows it to be
offside but I stand corrected because the camera of course isn’t
in line with the attacker.

game beggars belief.

So on that basis, if you have a bad day at work would you expect
your boss to "have a right go at you"? Or would you expect to
be given constructive criticism detailing exactly what was wrong
with your performance? There's a very big difference between
the two.

I’m not trying to say that though. I’m saying that his
performance wasn’t acceptable to any standard. And he may or may
not know that. Therefore, the Referee coach has to tell him this
and the areas of improvement. You can’t be performing like that,
even at youth level.

Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team) v Salford City FC (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Singh Gill, Sunny
Assistant Referee: Williams, Ollie
Assistant Referee: Wilding, Darren
Fourth Official: Felton, Niall
Whoever the
assessor was, needs to have a right go at Sunny because that

heavily, at full time. And I don’t blame the Crewe fans for
that. A generous 1/10 rating. One of the worst I’ve ever seen at

You literally said ...
Whoever the assessor was, needs to have a right go at Sunny
