I have absolutely no idea how he's not given a penalty there for
Burn on Calvert-Lewin. If defenders are just going to be allowed
to do that to stop strikers having a tap in then what is the
point of VAR?

You might need to watch that again, it clearly wasn't a foul.
Calvert-Lewin kicked the back of Burn's leg which was already
planted on the floor.

You might need to watch that again, it clearly wasn't a foul.
Calvert-Lewin kicked the back of Burn's leg which was already
planted on the floor.

No, actually he has watched the situation quite right. Burn
never plays the ball, indeed the ball isn't in playing distance
for him to shield, and he puts his leg across Calvert-Lewin in
order to stop the Everton player from kicking the ball into the
goal.
A tricky situation to perceive on the FoP, but a penalty kick
should have been awarded (and technically a RC as Burn has
denied an 'OGSO' w/o making an attempt to play the ball, but
awarding the penalty at all would be a start :D).

Burn deliberately put his leg there to block Calvert-Lewin from
having a tap in. It's a foul all day long.

Not for me, Burn puts his leg exactly where you would expect it
to go. Defenders don't need to move out of the way to allow
attackers to get to the ball.

Ask yourself a question - Did the defender made a foul challenge
on the striker? Answer is no.
Then follow up with another question - Did anywhere in the Law
prevent a defender from putting his leg in front of the
attacker? The answer is no.
Finally - Did the striker kicked the defender (irrelevant if its
accidental)? The answer is Yes.
Therefore, correct decision was made by the Officials.

Surely sticking a leg in front of an opponent is called
“tripping” and the only redeeming point can be if the ball is
within playing distance of the tripper, in which case he is
entitled to defend possession. Not seen the incident so can’t
comment further.

I am struggling with this incident in the sense that I don't
know what the correct decision is. I am tending towards a trip
for the defender puts his foot in front of the attacker who then
has nowhere to put his leg. I am uncertain whether the defender
owned the space and feel that on balance it was a penalty.

Would the defender have been penalised if the ball was close to
the touchline and he placed a leg there to prevent the attacker
playing the ball?
In my opinion no it happens all the time without sanction.
