Never a red card due to what other posters have said, so will
hurt kavanagh’s score for an incorrect KMI.
Shame as I thought as an overall perforance it was near enough,
faultless

Yellow card for me. As an official, you’re expecting red until
the point of contact. It’s almost a tripping action rather than
a studs-to-leg contact.
This is always the problem with high-bar/low-bar VAR thresholds.
I’m perfectly ok with this resulting in a recommended review,
but so long as football exists you’ll have edge cases where a
VAR either gets involved ‘when they shouldn’t or doesn’t get
involved ‘when they should’.
I’d prefer an OFR, but some of this depends on what the referee
described to the VAR because if he describes it well and VAR
think it’s a yellow, but cannot show an angle that clearly
disputes the referee’s description of what he say, then an OFR
is always going to be less likely.

I've only just watched the incident and replays and whilst I'd
love to give Bruno Fernandes a RC every week, that is an awful
decision or at least an awful failure to use the technology
fully. Fernandes has clearly slipped and hardly makes contact
with Maddison. Whilst you could argue it's a poor decision from
Kav, surely this is exactly the time that VAR should be
intervening. Peter Bankes should be saying either 'Kav, it's not
a red' or 'Kav go and take another look at the screen to see if
you want to change your mind'. If Kav then goes to the monitor
and watches it from every angle, and still decides it's a red in
his opinion then fine, I don't agree personally but he's at
least followed due process fully.

Fully agreed. I hope this was not a case of thinking a quick
decision needed to be made, and the VAR not using the technology
available as fully as it should be. There were suspicions about
this (at least in Mr Cooper's view) with Mateta's first goal in
the Palace v Leicester game recently (which frame was used..?)
and one must hope that VAR are not being encouraged or pressed
into making a quick decision in the interests of keeping the
game moving and customers (or at least most of them) satisfied
with VAR.

If Dermot on RefWatch was reflecting the PGMOL / Webb view, then
the RC is likely to be rescinded but presumably United have to
appeal it.
Looking at the replay again, CK didn't appear to have a great
view so it may well be that AR2 did provide the crucial input as
others have said. One of those situations when it would be
informative to hear the conversation between the onfield
officials and also what CK told VAR when it was being checked.
As a United supporter (sympathy please!), I dislike the dissent
and petulance too often displayed by Fernandes, but I do think
he was wrongly sanctioned in this instance for what should have
been just a YC.

I think it’s unanimous in the media and from former refs that a
red card was a mistake and should have been a yellow.fully
expect the red card will be rescinded

Yes, it should have been a caution rather than a sending off but
it couldn't have happened to a nicer fellow [emoji6] BF that is
not CK !
