Agree he slips into the challenge and feel slightly sorry for
him in that regard but dont see that as mitigation and not sure
the laws of the game allow for mitigation.

From first view, it seemed like between Kav and the AR closest
to the foul they decided it was a red card due to studs on shin.
Easy to think that on one view as well, given the tackle.
I fully expected it to go to OFR because in reality it was not
as originally seen. Strange that was not the case.

I don’t think it’s clear cut either way and you’d probably just
about back the onfield decision although I do wonder how much
unconscious bias there was given that it was Fernandes.

My opinion for what it’s worth - think back to the sending off
of the Southampton player the other week versus Man United,
ironically. It was a high challenge today and yes, Fernandez did
slip.
But once Kavanagh went red card, it was never going to be
overturned. Possibly falls into the referee’s call category.
As a matter of fact, I thought Chris Kavanagh did well,
sanctioning appropriately and being on top of the game
throughout. I wouldn’t say the sending off was an outrightly bad
decision, one of those in between ones. I’m just playing devils
advocate here, so feel free to disagree!
United were so woeful anyway so I don’t think the red card will
be used as an excuse.

I really don’t think Kavanagh had the perfect view of the
incident. I honestly think it comes from Richard West saying red
card as you can see Kavanagh looking towards West before the red
comes out.
It will be interesting to hear this on the Howard Webb show if
it’s featured.

My Liverpool-supporting credentials aren’t really hidden on here
but I don’t think that is a red card. He slips which isn’t
mitigation but it’s not excessive force and it doesn’t endanger
an opponent. Yellow for me.
At least it allowed Fernandes to be as anonymous as he usually
is against any half-decent team as he usually is without having
to run around like a headless chicken and moan constantly at the
officials.

That usually results in no action taken or a yellow card issued.
I do think that seeing as it is Fernandes if they appeal it may
be rescinded.

Not a red card for me either. Reckless yes, cynical yes but I
don't see it endangering a player's safety or at least by
accepted standards / precedent. However I feel that last year it
could have led to an OFR, this season the requirement is to go
with the onfield decision unless a clear mistake has been made.
Manchester United have cut jobs, rearranged the senior
management and yet nothing has changed. Sad to see and I speak
as a neutral but how good were Spurs?

The fact that it was his first red card in the Premier League is
astonishing in itself. If the ref had issued a yellow card VAR
would not have intervened, he issued a red and VAR did not
intervene. It sounds like a clear cut "ref's call" then.
Despite my personal bias against Fernandes (based on his
behaviour over a number of years); if forced I would have gone
yellow.
