A lot to digest……..

All the games yesterday had talking points, and there is an
awful lot to dissect, so here goes.
Newcastle v Man City - Jarred Gillett
Jarred Gillett, is, on current form, our top rated referee.
Following on from the North London derby which he handled
expertly, this was another intense and hard fought affair.
Again, Gillett was excellent by all accounts.
Two penalties, first one for the foul by Ederson on Gordon. At
full speed, Jarred Gillett obviously spotted the foul, but
slowed down, it was only obvious after several looks. But the on
field decision stood and that is fine by me.
Another Newcastle penalty appeal when Joelinton went down in the
area. No foul and correct for me, as the Newcastle player seemed
to be looking for contact. So both KMIs correct.
Brentford v West Ham - Simon Hooper
Some ridiculous behaviour from the West Ham manager when after
Hooper awarded a corner, he then blew for full time. What the
complaint was about, goodness only knows. Were West Ham about to
score from the corner? Who knows? Time up means time up, and the
manager’s idiocy made him look rather small. He should
concentrate on improving his team rather than worrying about
supposition.
Arsenal v Leicester - Sam Barrott
After a stellar season last year, Barrott is not at his best so
far this term. A difficult game for him yesterday, and Leicester
complained that an Arsenal goal shouldn’t have stood after a
foul on Vardy in midfield. Not sure about that one.
Also Leicester felt that Arsenal should have gone down to 10 men
for a second yellow card. The point is the first yellow card the
player received was harsh, but the player was lucky not to
receive a second one. Barrott then cautioned the Leicester
player for the imaginary card waving.
Needless to say, Steve Cooper complained afterwards (nothing new
there), but he should stop talking in riddles. If the refereeing
is that bad, he should say so, but if he is inferring something
more sinister, then that is way out of order.
Nottingham Forest v Fulham - Josh Smith
Four penalty shouts here, one given, three not.
Fulham’s penalty - yes for me. The defender’s foot raked down
the Achilles and there was also a push in the back. Definitely a
penalty.
Two Forest penalty shouts - the one on Elanga should,
considering the first one mentioned, have been given. There was
contact.
Another half hearted shout in the first half was rightly
ignored.
Then Tete of Fulham was pushed in the back and that also should
have been penalised. So a mixed day for referee Smith and VAR
John Brooks.
Chelsea v Brighton - Peter Bankes
Good to see Bankes back after injury and he had a breathless
game to oversee.
Chelsea goal rightly ruled out for offside and there was a
possible DOGSO by a Brighton player. Bankes judged there to be
cover so opted for a yellow card but also good to see a Chelsea
player penalised with a yellow card for suggesting the incident
merited something more.
Wolves v Liverpool - Anthony Taylor
The foul for the Liverpool penalty, correct for me, with the
Wolves player virtually grabbing the forward like a rugby
tackle.
Everton v Crystal Palace - Andy Madley
The Palace manager was in earnest discussion with fourth
official Tony Harrington about the non award of a penalty. I
must confess, the Palace player got wiped out and it was
bemusing to see no decision from Madley or intervention from
VAR.
So there you have it, a veritable smargasbord of decisions, some
good, some not so good. What is clear though, is who the go to
man is at the moment for the top games - Jarred Gillett. He has
taken a while to settle in but at the moment, his game
management and decisions are highly thought of and the next big
match (not involving the Merseyside teams of course (!)) will
likely see the Australian in charge again.

Ian thanks for these summaries they are very useful, I hope you
keep them up.
As someone who is keeping a close eye, would you say standards
have improved this season?

Thanks for your kind words DublinRef, this weekend was a fertile
ground for opinions and debate over decisions, unusually in
virtually all the games.
As regards standards, I don’t think the officiating has been too
bad, and I certainly like the fact that the VAR has stayed out
of the way a lot of the time, allowing the on field calls to
stand. That way, we see the best referees coming to the fore.
That being said, some incidents that were worthy of intervention
by VAR haven’t been. I think serious foul play needs to be
stamped on (pardon the pun) a lot more, a few things are being
missed.
When all is said and done, Jarred Gillett is by far and away our
best official at the moment, strong and applies the laws
consistently on the field.
The others have been much of a muchness, but no outright bad
performances have sprung to mind.

As you'll all know (almost to nauseum) I've rated him as being
'up there' from day one, and I'm pleased to see that others are
recognising this more and more

I agree that Jared Gillett is an extremely fine referee and is
definitely on a par with Anthony Taylor and Michael Oliver and
light years better than Attwell and Coote. I wonder if Dr
Gillett will achieve the Elite List in Europe ?

Is Gillett category 2 in UEFA or Cat1? I believe Brooks was
promoted to Cat. 1 to join Kavanagh with Pawson dropping down.
If ages are a factor in terms of promotion to elite, Gillett is
38 next month, Kavanagh was 39 last month and Brooks is only
34.
I believe other Cat 2 referees include Jones (37) and Madley
(41).
