Yep, another daft YC for DRP for an Arsenal player. Same issue
of consistency as with Kavanagh will be brought up again though
as Oliver chose to manage an earlier incident when Arsenal
wanted to take a quick free kick but Doku (I think) wouldn't let
him. This was shortly after the controversial equaliser and just
before the Trossard booking so I suspect game management and
pressure had a part to play.
Definitely a mistake also on the equaliser to not allow Walker
to get fully back into position, but given he was able to face
up Martinelli in the end, I don't think it can really be blamed
on the goal.

I have to be honest as much I love Oliver as a referee I can’t
remember him having a shocker of a first half for many years.
His decisions have been all over the place, and has not clamped
down on excessive fouling from both sides allowing tetchiness
and petulance to sink in.
Should have been 2 yellows (1 for each side) in first 10 mins.
He then lets doku get away with kicking the ball away, which he
then bins trossard for in injury time. Again total lack of
consistency

You would have thought after recent events that Arsenal players
above all others would be cautious about delaying the restart.
My interpretation of the Doku incident was Oliver was signalling
that the ball needed to go further back, so Doku wasn’t actually
delaying the restart but was instead retuning the ball to where
it needed to be.

trossard can have no complaints but a lack of consistency
doesn’t help, the doku incident was clear as well
Spell check changed trossard to gross are big change there

The jump into the back of Silva was probably worthy of a YC in
any case, although I doubt we would have seen it, had he not
kicked the ball away
[/quote]
Haaland did the same in the first few minutes and wasn't
cautioned so Trossard may not have been for that. Doku kicked
the ball away earlier and wasn't cautioned either. In summary,
who knows?

With regard to the Doku incident Tef has summed it up perfectly,
Doku kicked the ball to the Arsenal player who took the free
kick as Oliver was saying that is where the free kick should be
taken so cannot be delaying the restart.

Better second half but very unsavoury at the end. 2 teams with
terrible discipline but the PL site idly by. Not an easy game to
referee for Oliver who wasn’t st his best, but very difficult
when you have two teams like that

Must be difficult refereeing a game with 2 managers who are more
interested in their players being involved in proverbial housery
against each other rather than playing the game they are very
well remunerated for.
As a side note, all these pundits stating that players, managers
and supporters don't want red cards and they want 11 vs 11 so we
don't have the borefest that the 2nd half was. If that is the
case then why do players harangue referees to get their
opponents cautioned and supporters baying for cards as well?

I respect Mr Oliver, he is one of our top Referees
However, IMO, today he fell below his normal standard on more
than one occasion

This! I didn't see the edited word but agree about the comments
re players and pundits. The thing is we all know players can
behave when they choose to, you only have to look at the Euro's,
World Cup etc. where they behave so much better. As soon as they
get back to the league then it's a free for all in terms of
shenanigans again. If they want to see less red cards then they
need to stop the silliness and use their actual ball skills to
win games, it's really that simple. The games would be so much
better viewing because we would get to see them showcasing those
skills, they are over paid for and fans are over fleeced in
costs to see. Games would be easier to referee because fouls
would be easier to spot, instead of having to run through a
shenanigans checklist in the split second of making a decision.
There would naturally be less referee errors, more of those
sublime skills to give entertainment & everyone would actually
be much happier.
As for the pundits, they need to take a leaf out of Hungarian
TV's book, Hungarian pundits don't blame the referees for any
decisions, they actively call players out for any shenanigans,
they literally laugh at a player who waves the imaginary card
and subsequently gets booked, comments such as well he did ask
the referee to give him that, they are also required to pass a
LOTG exam every season to stop them peddling out rubbish in that
respect. If a referee calls one wrong they say so, they don't
shy away from that but it's a couple of sentences and they move
on.
