Crystal Palace v Man Utd - David Coote

Opinions on the Martinez two footed stamp? (admittedly on the
ball). Thought it was a red in real time. I know there’s no
contact but does it not come under serious foul play?

It’s 100% a red card and I’m surprised there is no on field
review.
That ‘challenge’ has no place on a football field. A two footed
jump down into the ball from directly above is not a genuine
challenge for the ball. It clearly uses excessive force and
endangers the safety of the opponent. The player does not have
to make contact or succeed in injuring the opponent for it to be
a red card.
Has shades of a challenge last season in the Arsenal v Newcastle
match (can’t remember who made the challenge) but a clear jump
with excessive force towards the opponent and pure luck that the
opponent wasn’t injured.

Not seen it, but PGMOL have said for years that if a challenge
like that only touches the ball, then it's an automatic caution.
If there is any contact with the player, then it is an automatic
dismissal.

Clear red for me, Coote seemed to have a good view of it, so not
sure how he deemed otherwise. Another case of a SG1 official
failing to recognise SFP.

And haven't PGMO issued statement to the effect that YC was
correct because no contact was made with the player.
Whatever opinion may be here, the referee got it right, VAR
didn't need to get involved and didn't.
I am uncomfortable about this as we are penalising the outcome
rather than the player's action which is potentially dangerous
but that is where we are. I saw something similar yesterday at
Exeter v Tigers, 2 similar and dangerous actions by 2 players,
force of impact determined the colour of the card. That is the
outcome determines the card colour.

If that's *not* a red card then the laws need to be changed so
it is. It's indefensible IMO. Totally unnecessary and
deliberate.
I also think there was contact with the top of the Palace
player's foot.

This is the sort of challenge that the red card is there to use.
It was not a mistimed lunge at the ball/player, it was a pure
act of spiteful violence meeting the excessive force criteria
(because he did not need to do it) and therefore should’ve been
serious foul play and a dismissal.

Of course, Original82 is correct.
Strange that nobody here has mentioned the penalty claim for
handball, how (un)surprising.

Please could you point to the PGMOL statement that says this?
