Is it wise for a referee to say publicly to a player what his
opinion is of a particular rule/law? I would say not, as I feel
it undermines the authorities who make them. It doesn't matter
whether a referee agrees or disagrees with a rule/law.

I remember when DOGSO was first brought in saying to a player "I
don't make the laws but I have to enforce them even if I'm not
sure about some"
50% of guys I spoke to said they would say same, 50% thought I
was wrong and that it gave grounds for appeal

I don't there's any harm in saying a 'those are the laws, I
might not like them but I am duty bound to enforce them' type of
thing. You're reinforcing that is what the LOTG say, your role
as an official to enforce them, whilst showing empathy at the
frustration caused by you having to do so.
I remember when one of our young players Mother passed away and
one of the senior players took his shirt off when he scored to
reveal a support message for the young lad & got booked. In his
interview after the game he mentioned that it was a mandatory
yellow and he knew he would get it but carried on anyway and
that the referee had said something like you know I have to book
you and in these circumstances I hate it followed by the player
expressing sympathy with the referees position and asking fans
not to have a go at him about it. In some situations it can
help.

I agree, I remember seeing a clip (below) of Wayne Barnes in a
rugby match saying “It might be a bad law but it is the law”.

I thought great comms between Simon Hooper and Darren England at
Goodison and between Darren Bond and Jarred Gillett at Fulham.
I’m not sure whether it’s knowing it’s a poor decision but Tim
Robinson seems to be trying to convince himself it’s a handball
for the Bournemouth incident, not his finest moment.

Think he should be saying, player you’ve got to go second
yellow, not sorry Dec you’ve got to go. Maybe I’m a old
fashioned dude.

I can only agree with you. The ways of modern officiating are
foreign to antediluvian types like me.

Referee has to be seen and heard to support the law. Whatever
sympathy the referee has must be shared privately. The law is a
good law imho, the criticism should be directed at the player.
It's bad for the game for referees to criticise the LOG and
there is no need to be sorry.

Episode 2 of Match Official's mic'd up is on Tuesday 7pm on Sky
Sports Premier League. Seems a quick turnaround from the first
episode.
