shouldn’t really be enthusing about someone doing there job
correctly should we ? I think the reason we are is because of
the current standard of officiating, mr gillett had a good game
nothing more nothing less words like ‘quality’
‘excellent’’great really are overused nowadays and that’s sad .

Refereeing at the most senior level in this country has never
been more challenging in my opinion due to the endemic of
gamesmanship and the intense scrutiny placed on every decision.
Far, far harder than a generation ago. Tottenham v Arsenal has
always been one of the biggest and highest profile matches in
the calendar and requires some very adept and accurate
officiating. This match had players who did not show the best
self discipline and so was particularly challenging to referee.
The fact that Mr Gillett did so extremely well in my view makes
me quite content to say that he put in a quality display and
certainly merits the term excellent.
If not this then I wonder what might be the criterion for a
referee's performance to be termed excellent or great and what
would give rise to enthusing ?

My apologies for referring to him incorrectly, I should have put
Dr Gillett

Sorry but I cannot agree that Gillett put in a “masterclass” or
was superb. He has made a clear error on a KMI. Timber goes over
the top of the ball in a stamping motion, doesn’t play any of
the ball, catches the spurs player high above the ankle. He then
proceeds to adopt N aggressive attitude including pushing with
several spurs players after this incident. I have seen numerous
players in the last few seasons sent off for a lot less than
this
At 0/0 a key decision with Arsenal down to 10 men game is
totally different

Gillett was EXCELLENT!!! As NRUReferee and Charlieref?boy? Said
- it’s a sad indictment for English refereeing that a referee
who had an amazing game was Australian trained and not this
English FA training… where it’s all about over management of
everything now a days…
Gillett refereed the game without fear and to enforce the laws
absolute masterclass… 7 yellows first half spot on, 2nd half
just 1 yellow showed he made his point that if u Carry on you’re
get carded …. It was a good game to watch because of the
sanctions he took.
The 2 Spurs players yellows at once for 2 Fouls was excellent
and caused Son to go into a fit of disbelief rage but looked
like Gillett told him to just go away and fix up your players !!
That is how you manage a big game - lovely and tight first 45
minutes don’t take any risks and apply justice and sanction to
anyone who needs a card…. English football needs to seriously
look how we are training the young referees currently because we
are no where near the standards required anymore.
Gillett for me now has to be in the top 3 with Oliver and Taylor
and I expect to see him on all the big games going forward !!
For once a referee with no fear and trying to appease players

I have to respectfully disagree with the perfectly legitimate
post made by ajb95 here…
I would certainly throw into the mix why VAR didn’t come in if
it was a KMI to recommend a review for SFP by Timber.
I thought yellow was the correct decision. If it was a full stud
on shin contact without contact on the ball I certainly would
support red.

Timber's challenge fell precisely into the "referee's call"
category.
It did not look good on first viewing (I called red); but I can
see why my wife (who is not a qualified referee but has suffered
from being married to one for 30 years) called yellow.

I can see why a referee might have gone red but it's a yellow
for me, I don't think it had the force or impact point for a
red. However it didn't look great and it was a daft challenge.
There's always a degree of subjectivity and it was a very
strange tackle so probably not one that is in Howard Webb's
coaching manual for how to sanction. The game blew up for a bit
and then cooled down, we'll never know if that was just a
natural cooling or one that the referee caused but he certainly
didn't do anything that wasn't supportable or caused it to
reignite.

Happy to agree with responses above, but then what about second
yellow for causing melee afterwards, including pushing several
spurs players?
