Agreed, only 3 minutes added in the 1st half, the dust up took
that to sort, plus the time wasting.

I haven’t seen the game but the comments on here, in control,
authoritative, good with the sanctions, sum up Jarred Gillett in
a nutshell really.
Why has he been appointed to this game? Because he is now one of
the best referees in the country, that’s why. It seemed as
though the players wanted to take the law into their own hands,
but the yellow cards dished out meant there was only one person
in control, and that was Jarred Gillett.
Could have been some red cards as the yellow card count was
high, but it sounds as though he was the boss and that thought
never materialised.
That’s two derbies he’s refereed this season and has done an
excellent job in both. One of our top officials for sure on
current form.

He did his job competently to the standard expected, we
shouldn’t really be enthusing about someone doing there job
correctly should we ? I think the reason we are is because of
the current standard of officiating, mr gillett had a good game
nothing more nothing less words like ‘quality’
‘excellent’’great really are overused nowadays and that’s sad .

Refereeing at the most senior level in this country has never
been more challenging in my opinion due to the endemic of
gamesmanship and the intense scrutiny placed on every decision.
Far, far harder than a generation ago. Tottenham v Arsenal has
always been one of the biggest and highest profile matches in
the calendar and requires some very adept and accurate
officiating. This match had players who did not show the best
self discipline and so was particularly challenging to referee.
The fact that Mr Gillett did so extremely well in my view makes
me quite content to say that he put in a quality display and
certainly merits the term excellent.
If not this then I wonder what might be the criterion for a
referee's performance to be termed excellent or great and what
would give rise to enthusing ?

Kind of is a bit of an indictment of standards, development and
training within the FA that one of our top referees was one who
came into the League from abroad…

hi,
yep, got to agree with the majority of previous comments in this
thread - after a testosterone filled first half which was firmly
but fairly refereed, the second half was a markedly calmer
affair, in no small measure due to JG (and team's) clear
application of the laws. also, it was refreshing to see, on
numerous throw-ins, the throw taker being called back after
trying to 'wander' a few yards up the touchline before
attempting to take the throw.
re: time wasting - yes, there were a few occasions when raya
wasn't the quickest at getting the ball back into play, but in
no way did he get anywhere near the epic levels of jordan
pickford or emi martinez gamesmanship. The ref however, did play
6 minutes additional time when 5 had been indicated, so perhaps
he factored that in.
a satisfactory day.
regards,
gnr

The significant reduction in the number of cautions in the
second half suggests that the referee did his work well in the
first half and the players responded accordingly. It goes to
show that there is more than one way to "manage" a game.

As a referee you take a risk with whichever strategy you take.
Keep the cards away and you get criticised if the games gets too
feisty and you lose control, card too early and you get accused
of ruining the game. The fact that he had completely control of
the game, and behaviours improved in the second half, would
suggest to me that Jared Gillett got it absolutely spot on here.

A few further observations. I read, with some amusement, that
Gillett lost the game, too many yellow cards, no empathy for it
being a derby etc etc, blah de blah.
So if the Australian had adopted a lenient approach and the game
became a foul fest with little in the way of sanctions, he would
have been pilloried for inconsistency and lack of action.
Proving that referees can’t win whatever they do, Gillett
adopted a tougher approach that worked. Seven yellow cards only
was added to once more in the second half, meaning the players
wanted to get on with it more rather than settling scores.
I have to say the criticism came from fans who wouldn’t know the
first thing, in the main, into what it is like to referee a top
flight match with all the attendant hype and hot air flying
around. Put the critics into that position and they would run a
mile.
Also a lot was made of the foul by Timber that Spurs thought
should have been a red card. Not for me. Timber put his foot on
the ball, didn’t go over it and VAR Stuart Attwell backed Jarred
Gillett’s original decision of a yellow card. The silly handbags
that followed were sorted out calmly and efficiently with a
further yellow card for the Spurs goalkeeper for making his
feelings known.
So if you read and hear a lot of rubbish about Jarred Gillett’s
performance today, ignore it and read the enlightened and
objective comments from the correspondents on here. Fans see
things through blinkers, others see things fairly and
objectively. I know which I prefer.
And well done to Gillett for passing his test with distinction.
