Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team) v Morecambe FC (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Simpson, Scott
Assistant Referee: Sowerby, Matthew
Assistant Referee: Hall, Bradley
Fourth Official: Taylor, Grant
I don’t even know what to say today. And no, not about Crewe
Alex who were terrific but the match officials. The 4th Scott
Crewe have had this season, and this one was, well, appalling.
He was so inconsistent from the get go. 3 mins in, our attacker
is flying down the wing, gets wiped out. A defined yellow card.
Oh no, just a talking to. If that foul happened about 10 mins
later it would’ve been a booking…
The first yellow card of the game went to Crewe’s #10 which was
the most obvious SPA you’ll ever see. The goal which Crewe
scored came from the penalty spot, which came from Scott
spotting a shirt pull. A soft penalty award, but if it happened
anywhere else on the pitch it would be a foul. Still, so
inconsistent with what he was giving, and many
players/coaches/fans were left confused to what he had given.
Second half, he wasn’t much better at all.
AR2 Bradley Hall wasn’t much better either. Offsides were fine,
but he put his flag up for a throw 2/3 times when Scott pointed
the other way. What’s the point in having the comms kit if they
aren’t going to communicate for simple things?
Not impressed at all. What were the positives? He didn’t wear
yellow, he had a whistle and his yellow card.

I went to Newport County Vs Port Vale as a neutral today. I know
it is the first season that Stephen Parkinson has been
refereeing on the EFL so I was interested to see what he was
like.
Well... if I am being totally honest it was a real poor showing
from Mr Parkinson. He started off by giving very soft free kicks
to both sides and it just killed any flow to the game. There was
a lot for Mr Parkinson to keep his eye on as it was a very
physical game, he got his yellow card out for a couple of tasty
challenges. However, a few more challenges went in that were
clear cautions and he failed to deliver and this increased the
temperature of the game. Newport players were clearly feeling
aggrieved by the inconsistency.
As for the second half the temperature of the game got even
hotter and Mr Parkinson really struggled to keep a lid on
things. The first key incident was the first Newport player
being sent off. This happened off the ball and the Newport
player did pin the Port Vale player to the ground and elbow him
in the face. So, a clear red card for violent conduct. After
this incident more tasty tackles went in where not much was done
and both sets of players were getting a bit hot under the
collar. As for the second red card, the balls that are around
the pitch are close to the fans and Port Vale fans kept throwing
the ball onto the pitch to which a Newport player booted the
ball back into the Port Vale fans. The Port Vale players went
crazy at Mr Parkinson and as the Newport player had already been
cautioned he then sent him off for a second bookable offence.
All in all a very difficult day at the office for Mr Parkinson
and most likely a game he has learnt a lot from. I do think
because of the physical nature of the game it would had suited a
more experienced EFL referee. I just think he was very
inconsistent with his foul detection and his issuing of yellow
cards.

Can’t argue with either red brandished by Kettle junior today.
One for GK handball outside the box and the other was a vicious
swinging elbow. The latter should be more than a three match ban
for VC if that was in the regulations.

Harry Smith’s well known in this division for being a nasty
piece of work, I can’t imagine it’s his first violent conduct
dismissal. Farman’s red took me 3 or 4 watches from the TV angle
but spot on. Not sure i’ve seen a dismissal for handball out the
box from that far out before!

I can’t recall seeing a goalkeeper making a save almost level
with the edge of the centre circle either. As you mentioned,
when watching again the ball clearly deflects off an
outstretched hand.

Thanks for this. Sounds like the Mr Parkinson we had at Crewe
Alex last season. By far the worst of the 3-4 triallists we had
during the season.

Bizarre appointment at Oldham!
If you need match fitness, it doesn't matter where you get it
from.
No, but given the Southern nature of the National League,
trekking up to Oldham seems a tad unnecessary (Take it from me,
driving 6 miles there is also unnecessary!).
I get that he could be in the area for other reasons, before
anyone says it, but my point was that it's a stand out
appointment.
Obviously very happy with the appointment but, unless he has
other reasons for wanting to be in the area, surely it's madness
for him to travel 500 miles - possibly 10 hours in a car to
enhance his fitness. And yes it's the first real stand out
appointment since the new National List pooling.
Hope he negotiated the closure of the M62 in the Rochdale /
Oldham area ok. Mrs AT said it was a 'mare on Sunday afternoon.

Thanks for this Ryan. I had other things on over the weekend, so
