Charles Breakspear - Gillingham vs Chesterfield

Well where to start with mr Breakspear. Just lost control from
the 1st minute a yellow card was issued (no surprise there). The
guy just makes it all about him and lost total control. The
chesterfield second yellow card was never a yellow card as well!

As a neutral I took advantage of this game being available on
Sky and I must strongly disagree with this post. I’m almost
certain that you are a Chesterfield fan upset that they lost. To
say he lost control is absurd. At no point did that come close
to happening. Apart from a tetchy final 5 minutes what happened
to make you claim that, apart from the result. At worst player
behaviour here was standard . As for the first minute yellow
card, no legitimate referee in the land couldn’t have produced a
card there. You probably have a point about the second yellow at
the end being questionable but that would be a bad decision and
still not a lack of control. It’s a shame Chesterfield lost and
you may have disagreed with some/many of the decisions but he
absolutely did not lose control from the first minute or at all.
This was a very experienced referee who strolled about in a way
that suggested he was about 20% challanged.

I have seen Mr Breakspear referee several times and never once
has he come anywhere close to losing control. Indeed, if any
criticism were to be levelled at him it is that he keeps his
matches under very tight, perhaps at times too tight, control.
Off the pitch he is affable but I don't think he has a 'matey'
style with the players and management among whom he is
officiating. Leniency is not a word I would associate with his
refereeing; strictness is.

His card count was very high in the last few seasons which
certainly backs up what was said here.
Hence why he did gain a reputation of being a card shark on
these boards.

We need to look beyond card count, that just shows he enforces
the laws to the level that he thinks is going to manage the
game. I like him and his style, his style is no tolerance to
incidents and players know where they stand, it the new modern
day ref of over managing everything who causes the biggest
problems because no line is ever drawn, and numerous players
always comment all they want is someone who is totally
consistent

When I saw Charles Breakspear referee Sunderland games when we
were in that dreadful League One I always thought he was canny
and if I remember rightly at the time learned posters upon this
forum rated him to attain a higher status as the future
unfolded.

I am very surprised he hasn't made SG2 ( always presuming he
would wish to ). He's a much better referee than some who ply
their trade in that Group.

He refereed two Championship fixtures last season, though,
Norwich v Rotherham and Bristol City v Rotherham.

But I agree Breakspear should be a confirmed SG2 100% maybe even
higher … I’m so surprised he has not been moved into that group
