Lewis Smith - Ipswich vs Fulham

Hi all RTR readers, just quick to let you know I’m new to the
forum and this is my first post.
But onto the game, I thought Lewis Smith was excellent today. I
understand he has come under criticism in his previous premier
league games but should he perform like he did today on a
regular basis then there’s no reason he cannot be a regular
member of SG1.
He set his standard for fouls quite high in the opening minutes
which led to a very entertaining encounter. For most of the
match he stayed in the background and let the match flow which
was refreshing to see. All cautions seemed correct and
potentially a DOGSO for Fulham player in second half (but I was
in the other stand so couldn’t see very well). There were a
couple of soft free kicks at times but overall it was a top
class performance.
Hopefully Smith performs like this more often in the PL because
if he does he will get many more games at this level

Welcome to the forum and many thanks for the informative report.
Good to hear Smith had a positive outing. I wonder if he is
likely to feature prominently this season, especially with the
injuries at present.

I too watched the whole match and whilst it wasn't quite as
perfect as the OP made out, it was by far considerably better
than his previous PL outings.
I would say it was a good solid performance and something to
build upon, the highlights being setting a fairly high bar and
allowing the game to flow, not being swayed by a vociferous home
crowd and unlike last time, keeping his cards in his pocket as
much as possible.
Where Lewis needed to be stronger was in dealing with persistant
tussling at literally every corner, a couple of times he's
stopped the game to speak to the players but they've just then
reverted to the same straight away. A YC or two, or FK/PK would
have soon calmed things down. He also failed to censure Kalvin
Philips for PI and ultimately a foul through the back of Kenny
Tete for which a good advantage was played, but he should've
then issued a retrospective yellow card.
Along with 'his brother', he could make a decent SG1 ref if he
continues to improve.

Welcome TA Ref.
I made the trip to Ipswich yesterday. Not my first time there,
but have to say always one of the most welcoming clubs to visit
for away fans. Not sure if we have any Ipswich correspondents,
but I’m impressed every time I go. Nice town, nice people.
I also thought Lewis Smith did well. At first he let too much go
and I feared he was about to lose control. There was one
particular challenge from an Ipswich player that was a nailed on
yellow card, for which he awarded the free kick but no sanction
to the player.
After that though, and possibly because it was two decent
footballing teams, there wasn’t too much of note to deal with.
Lewis awarded a few yellow cards (all correct) and appeared to
have full control of the match. A MUCH improved performance from
his last Fulham outing, and one that showed he has the ability
to join SG1 in the not too distant future.
As for the game, I thought Ipswich were decent, and on that
showing should have no problems staying up, which I sincerely
hope they do. Fulham we’re blurgh and possibly lucky to take a
point.

Can’t disagree with any of my fellow Fulham correspondents and
our new member in their succinct analysis.
Good to witness that he had a good game with the highlights and
I think the Villa game where Smith was sub standard was in fact
a good experience for him and that it’s probably helped him.
So it’s been Taylor, 007, Stroud and Smith so far this season.
Gillett soon?
