Aston Villa v Arsenal - Michael Oliver

Indisputably our number one referee was in charge of this game
on Saturday and in my opinion, lived up to his reputation.
Always in control, correct with the cautions, defused some
potential flashpoints with calm and assurance and the players
gave him little problem.
The Arsenal manager was hopping up and down on the touchline on
one occasion and Oliver just went over to him, had a quiet word
and all was fine after that. It was a fast moving game and the
referee can be pleased with his evening’s work.

I would contest your use of indisputably.
Every official has good games and not so good, hence
indisputable is, IMO, an inappropriate adjective to use on
respect of who we may consider best or least good as it can
change from game to game.
For example I thoughr Mr Coote had an indistinguished game this
weekend whilst Mr Jones was excellent.
I'd not be surprised to form a different opinion next weekend.
For those anticipating a spirited monologue insisting that Mr
Taylor is/was indisputably our best official - sorry but there
were better this week

Quite a good number of SG1 referees can have a brilliant match
from time to time and so , on any particular day, can lay claim
to producing the best performance of the weekend. However, to be
a Number 1 there has to be consistency in producing excellent
performances time after time ( obviously there will be the odd
poor game because no-one is immune from those ). At this moment
in time I think the only dispute for the Number 1 crown is
between Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor. Both extremely fine
referees, for me Oliver just shades it but I can see a
reasonable case could be made by someone for Taylor.
For the near future, I think John Brooks is certainly
challenging Oliver and Taylor and Rob Jones may well not be too
far behind. Sam Barrott has the potential though time will tell
if that is realised.

Watching from the stands i thought Mr Oliver and team were
excellent.
When needed Mr Oliver was on the spot and dealt with the
situations at hand in a firm way with confidence, something Mr
Coote failed to do today.

I’d agree with that Whistleblower fully. Lee Mason often got a
lot of stick on here and elsewhere but the few times I watched a
full game with him in charge I thought he was superb. Same with
Mike Jones and Neil Swarbrick. Of course I saw the highlight
reels where they made howlers but I do think that if a referee
can survive at the top level for many years, the odd case of
politics etc. aside, they probably do deserve to be there.
On the question of number one, again I agree between Oliver and
Taylor. For me, Oliver is best in the EPL and Taylor the best
internationally. I just think those competitions suit their
respective styles. Saying that, I’m not sure either are at the
level of Clattenburg or Webb and more broadly I don’t think
England has had the best referee in Europe for some years now.

With the top referees, it often comes down to personal taste.
Webb was excellent. Both Taylor & Oliver have been consistently
good for a number of years and in the context of doing a lot of
heavy lifting in terms of being often given the pressure games.
I personally always thought Clattenburg was quite over rated. A
bit too flustered and his personality counted against him (for
me) - too full of himself, as shown since he left the list -
whereas Webb/Taylor/Oliver just work hard and get on with the
job.
