BELOW SG

As a Sunderland fan [ and an extremely passionate one at that]
two successive relegations have taken it out of me and left a
permanent scar however the reasons why we are where we are is
another story, and whilst I accept it will be seen I am posting
this on the strength of a
decent start to the season I have to say I have been impressed
at the standard of refereeing below the SG1/2 we have had.
Messrs Brooks,Breakspear,Coggins,Backhouse and Busby have all
been impressive and whilst Messrs Coggins and Breakspear have
had big calls to make both in and not in our favour in general
terms they all have looked as if they would not be out of place
as SG refs in the future.
Perhaps others who are or have been referees themselves may
disagree I can only comment on what I see.

I have to admit I rarely had any complaints about referees in
our league 1 & 2 days. Sure there were a few bad days at the
office but I found the referees more relaxed. I wonder if they
feel under less pressure at that level and therefore go out onto
the pitch a bit more relaxed and that reflects with better
performances? There is a huge pressure in the PL and quite
often for TV games there is an audience of millions, that's a
lot of people seeing you make a mistake! You can argue all day
long that these guys are professionals and yes they are but they
are also human, some will cope better with the pressure than
others.

I await Mr Kettle's arrival with baited breath after reading
some of the posts about him over the years. :)

I notice you haven't had any of my "favourites ' yet. You might
want to reconsider in a couple of months.

Of the referees you mention as having seen, John Brooks is
clearly destined for the very top of the game. Of the others, I
have only seen John Busby live; he put in a creditable though
unspectacular performance in a game which probably did not
afford him huge scope to be spectacular.

He's earned that "bad press" with over 15 years of staggering
incompetence and ineptitude.
His worst excesses and knee jerk decisions were at their peak
around about ten years plus ago and are largely behind him now,
leaving just a very poor referee making very poor decisions.

Lest we forget the shambles in the Wimbledon v Stevenage game in
recent times...classic Kettle.
