What a lovely breath of fresh air from Oliver Glasner about the
decision! I’ve only just seen it but how brilliantly refreshing!
'It shows that he has a good character and he is a good guy,'
Glasner said. 'We can always find excuses. It's part of the game
to make mistakes. I didn't see anyone who made no mistakes. I
made mistakes today as well. It shows that he's a great man to
say 'yes I made a mistake' but it doesn't change things.
'Of course everyone was surprised that the referee blew his
whistle so early but I can't complain about it because the
decision is made”

The referee will have taken a big lesson from yesterday's game.
If he is as good as many people suggest he is, it is not
something he will repeat.
What we do not know - and will probably never know - is if VAR
would have intervened and recommended an OFR had that
opportunity arisen. Given the speed and decisiveness of the
award of a defensive free-kick it is entirely possible that VAR
would have left the decision as it is (Referee's Call?) or that
the referee would have stuck with his original decision.
In every other level of English football, this is a non-issue.
It can be argued that the availability VAR has created an issue
in this case.

Whilst it looked a bit messy, I really don't think the end
outcome would have been any different even if he had delayed the
whistle. Some think it was a foul, some don't, but there is no
way on earth VAR could deem it to have been a clear and obvious
error. Especially not with the new lighter touch directive in
play for this season, and even more certainly not given
officials have been told to look for and clamp down on holding
and blocking at set pieces. Its almost as though there was a
view that the foul didn't affect the goal, which it didn't, but
if a foul occurred before the ball crossed the goal line it is
still a foul.

Agreed. Think people forget that the referee still has to make a
decision. Even if he delays the whistle, once the ball crosses
the line he will blow whistle to indicate the foul and then over
to VAR who, as you say, are unlikely to over rule the referees
call.
It's not like it is a terribly wrong decision that VAR is going
to recommend an on field review for.

It is interesting that on a number of occasions last season
there were contributors complaining that (in their opinion)
holding back from making decisions, and waiting for VAR to "bail
them out" but now we are complaining that a referee has made a
decision without waiting for / deciding that he did not need VAR
to assist him.
